Weapon Idea: Caltrop!

Caltrop!

 

Caltrops are an arrangement of steel or iron spikes into a tetrahedron always presenting one spike upward. They have a long history of use in warfare from Roman times to the Japanese Shogunate era, and even today as devices to pop pneumatic tires.

 

My proposal for them in Warframe is to have them as a secondary and be able to deploy 3 groups consisting of 3 caltrops at a time. They would slow and deal puncture damage to any humanoid enemy who stepped upon them. They would be ideal for delaying pursuers and fortifying objectives.

1) Castanas deal electricity damage, not puncture damage.

2) Caltrops can't be detonated and Castanas can.

3) Castanas do not slow targets like Caltrops, they stun them.

4) Caltrops are deployed in groups of 3 and Castans aren't.

I know Caltrops are a decidedly low tech weapon compared to the Castanas, but surely there is room for a secondary with a more utilitarian nature such as this.

One way to 'futurize' the caltrop could be that they are tossed out as a single device that separates after throwing into 3 individual caltrops. Picturing three caltrops folded up into a roughly rectangular shape, with the center one being slightly larger then the other two. Before they hit the ground, the two smaller caltrops are jettisoned via magnetics a short distance away from the central caltrop.
