"Fulfill the vessel's inscription"

So I know I have to kill certain enemy types (ones that match the symbol on the vessel) however I cannot see the symbol, It just looks like bandages wrapped around it.

Any help? what have I forgotten?

EDIT: using the item in mission seems to do nothing either

Don't need to use the item mid-mission, just slap it in your "gear wheel" then start killing the appropriate target.

You'll know you're hitting the right target.

if not you will see a light similar like the stalker or sentients in your energy color

if you kill the target you will see it then
