Suggestion For Item Hotkey?

Has anyone ever suggested an item hotkey before?

Really bothers me that you need to use a cursor, wherever it may be, to select one square from a 2x4 squares just to use an item that is immediately required.

 

hurr derr ur fault for not being able to select it fast enough. I guess I am at fault for not being able to manually select an item while being under constant fire from most directions. That, or my fault for thinking this is something to use in the middle of combat. Now I'm wondering what the purpose of shield restore outside of combat is.

 

Why is it impossible or cost inefficient to make F1-4 a hotkey for restoring health, shields, and primary & secondary ammo? Press F1 and it auto-applies a health restore; F2, a shield restore; F3 and F4 auto selects primary ammo box and pistol box respectively. Did I miss DE stating that the restoratives are not for combat emergencies and only for use after combat? Or does hotkeying items ruin the challenge. If I did, then disregard this post.
