I've always thought maybe the white part was supposed to be marble, as a callback along with all that gold to showing off their tremendous wealth and power.

Granted it's not grained so probably not, but just going for the same intent then.

Note that it is possible to make made or Cultured Marble and this would be along the lines of what you're thinking.

"Cultured stone is a blend of stone particles and resins that is combined with pigments to produce a wide range of colors and realistic, natural looking patterns – cultured marble, cultured granite, and cultured onyx among them. Unlike quarried stone, cultured stone is cast in molds to create specific pieces such as bathtubs, sinks, countertops, backsplashes, moldings and trim, shower walls and shower pans."
