Dual weapons, can you keep the original?

I am looking at some recipes for dual weapons.

One of the recipes requires a weapon that has a potatoe in it already. Now, I know that I will lose that potatoe if I make the dual weapon from this gun. That is really poor from DE.

My question is this:

Can I create 3 copies of a weapon? If I could, when crafting the dual version which copies would it use? Would this allow me to have the dual and single versions?

Yes, you can create three copies of the weapon. When you go to make the dual weapon, it will bring up all the appropriate single weapons you have, and let you pick from those. So, assuming you didn't level the new ones you crafted, it'll show one at Rank 30 and two unranked ones, letting you easily pick the ones you want.
