((OOC))

The human research ship, Taurus, has gone dark.  Lights flicker on and off throughout the hall as Phillip sprints through them.  The only sounds now were the raging fires as the ship fell apart around him.  A flash of movement, alien breathing, and the thud of a metal door being ripped from its hinges follow, and Phillip, desperately out of breath, continues to run.  He climbs into the communication seat, and begins typing an emergency broadcast.  "Please!  Maday! We need anyone to respond, to help!  The experiments, they, they didn't end up as we planned.  I don't know how many have survived, bu please......Oh god.  It's here.  Please save me.  SAVE M--"  he quickly hits the transmit button as the figure picks him up, his throat impaled, and his vision blurring.  The last thing he sees is a gaping maw of a creature that was once human.

-

The rescue shuttle that responded rushed to the ship, it's crew of five and a pilot. It moved from the other side of the solar system, shrouded in darkness, pausing to follow a passing corpus treasure ship.  The crew was in no hurry to answer the distress call.

((To join:. simply have your character wake up in a random location.  you can describe it, but make sure it fits the theme of a human/corpus research vessel.  I will control who you are close to.

Races: Human, Corpus.

Gear: whatever you can find.

If you have any questions, either PM me, or ask in the OOC thread.))

The screaming had finally died down, though a fresh one could be heard every few minutes as more fell victim to whatever had overrun the vessel. Inside the ship's kitchen, a young lad in a junior chef's jacket over a civillian jumpsuit stirred as he lay on the floor. The laser-etched name tag on his jacket read 'Drei'. He slowly raised himself to a sitting position, his face in his hand as he endured the throbbing pain in his head. His other hand felt around on the ground beside him and touched the crockpot that had fallen from its hook and knocked him out in the first place. It appeared that whatever had overrun the ship, it had missed him while he lay unconscious on the floor in the darkness of the kitchen, half-buried under several cans of soup stock and sauces that had fallen from a shelf in the stampede. Slowly getting to his feet, Drei felt his way around the dimly-lit kitchen with its eerily-red emergency lighting and headed to the dishwashing bay, which at least had a door that he could bolt.

His eyes searched around as he went, looking for something that he could perhaps use. Not feeling rather confident in the small and rather precise cutting knives in the modern kitchen, he instead settled on the large, meter-long meat hook at the back of the kitchen where a large slab of vat-grown meat had hung from just several hours ago. He gripped the shaft tightly in his hands. The hook barely qualified as a makeshift weapon, but he took comfort in its length and the mild sense of security it gave him.

The alarms died down as the power throughout the ship shut off.  the emergency lighting came back on shortly after, and the commotions outside have ceased. Now, the only sounds were his breathing ad his heartbeat.

Lucy sat up directly into a metal bar that had falled into the hallway and banger her head again.  "Ow."  Being more careful this time, she stood up, dusted herself off, and looked around.

What was once a medical bay hallway was now a chamber of wreckage.  Sparks occasionally flew off of stray wires where the lights used to be, and the glass quarantine rooms were demolished, the only patients being what remained of the staff.  The only sources of light were the few lamps that survived and the faint glow of a monitor's screen saver.  The metal bar appears to be part of a rack which toppled over in the commotion.  It seems that she was luckier than the fellow impaled underneath the bulk of the rack's weight.  The monitor's light, and the office area, is behind the rack.  Down the quarantine hallway is a heavy metal door; a flicker of light can be seen through the small window of the door.

Taking care to avoid knocking over anything in the darkness, Drei stepped slowly and quietly over the mess on the floor, edging towards the doorway that was ajar. His survival instinct and sheer common sense advised him to stay put in a dark corner and hope that someone somewhere out there had picked up some sort of distress signal, but curiousity was overwhelming. A peek at the corridor outside wouldn't hurt, hopefully.

And more importantly, he didn't quite fancy the idea of being alone in a barricaded, unlit and poorly-ventilated kitchen rationing ketchup soup while what remained of the unprepared and unrefrigerated food rotted in pots and piles all around him.

Poor Dave.  He had a good sense of humor.

Lucy picked her way toward the door and peeked through the window.

In the corridor lay multiple corpses, some less intact than others.  At the end, the metal door that was once there now lays on the floor in front of the frame.  The lights flickered on and off, and from above, a soft creaking sound echoes from the ventilation shafts.

Inside the sealed room a body missing it's head, a strun laying next to the corpse.  the door is locked from the other side.there is a rapid thumping sound, as if something is crawling through the vents.

Lucy studied the door quickly, looking for the hinges and which type of lock it had, and pulled a bobby pin out of her hair.

The door's lock is a heavy turn-bolt, requiring an electromagnetic seal to become absolutely secure.  However, since the power is running on back up generators, the magnetic seal is useless.  The only thing holing it in place is the two pistons, secured only be a lock similar to a dead bolt.  The sound of something crawling through the vents moves off into the distance, the echoes continuing until it is no longer heard.

Lucy turned her attention to the doorframe.  If it was made of steel or anything softer and the hinges were on the other side, she could get through.

Drei considered stopping to study the bodies with what little coronary and medical knowledge he had, but he was rather exposed in the corridor, and wasn't quite looking forward to being jumped while squatting over the mangled body of the head chef trying to discern if whatever had got to him sported claws or sixteen-inch fangs. Looking ahead, the door had been forced out of its frame. It was when he stepped through the doorway over his shoulder when he heard it.

Instinctively ducking, Drei watched the ceiling, his eyes tracing the noise in the shafts overhead. The darkness did well to heighten his senses, and hopefully his teenage hobby of hunting in Earth's brush for population control would prove useful. The noise was not particularly loud, but dismissing it as a maintenance-related sound seemed rather complacent. He stepped slowly through the doorway in a raised crouch movement, straining his hearing and peripheral vision the best he could.

The door is made of a high carbon steel, and appears to be heat treated.  It is hard to discern, but the door opens out, towards where Lucy is standing.

The creaking grew softer, then abruptly stopped.   through the broken door, there is less bodies, and the only signs of wreckage are a few rooms that have been blown apart.  This room is a cross section, with three other doors, forming a cross.  In the center of the cross, an air grate falls to the floor, and a shape that is roughly human drops from the ceiling, landing in a crouched position.  It utters a low, guttural growl, as if it was rapidly clicking its tongue. It faces away from Drei, but is looking back and forth, as if deciding which way to go.

Fear rooted him to the spot, but a vague sense of familiarity cleared his mind and allowed him to think rationally. Making a movement now would immediately give away his presence - he was in kitchen crew garb and clunky safety shoes, not rainforest ranger attire. Instincts directed his actions. Expose one's back to the prey and the hunter becomes the hunted. But armed with only a meat hook with no knife or revolver for the kill, he wasn't sure which was which in this scenario.

Staying low, Drei gauged the length of his tool and raised it behind his head as though he were about to strike with a net. Meanwhile he tried to discern the stature of the subject, whether if it was a quadrupedal that would spring at him with force from its back legs or an upright walker that he should try to knock off-balance instead. Assuming it saw him and came his way, that was. Hopefully that would not be the case.

The creature got up, and bolted to the door on the left.  It moved fast, sticking to the darkest paths, but its form was definitively humanoid.  the lights flickered again, this time only half of them coming back to life.

A sigh of relief sounded tempting, but even a loud exhalation felt like it could alert something nearby to his position. Controlling his breathing, Drei crept forward slowly in a well-practiced stalk. Peeking around the bend, he watched it vanish into the flickering darkness. It seemed to be on the hunt, and Drei wasn't particularly keen on finding out whether it did so out of hunger or of savagery. He briefly considered making his way back into the kitchen and locking himself up in the dishwashing bay with a few cans of chicken stock. That seemed wiser than skulking around in poorly-lit corridors among loose specimens of whatever it was that had gotten loose. Well, if it weren't for his mild claustrophobia at least. Mild.

If he were to survive, knowing his enemy would be a benefit. Maybe if he could observe one a bit further to get a better gauge of its physical abilities(aside from being able to rip heads off bodies and tearing doors out from their frames), he'd be able to make more informed and educated decisions later on.

As if what he was doing was an informed and educated decision. Keeping to the darkest of corners himself, Drei lowered the hook in his hands and followed in the direction the creature had went.

Through the door is a room much like a guest office, but more official.  Two computers are still intact, both playing a screen saver image, a fish tank, and space.  The only sign that the creature has been here is the mass of destruction, and a few desecrated corpses.  One corpse lies face down on a keyboard, in front of the fish tank computer.

Upon entering the room, Drei first made sure to determine the location of the room's entry points at both doorways and ceiling and keep a mental note of where they were, before proceeding to do a quick search of the room. In a more enclosed space with no apparent threat in sight, perhaps he could look around and find things of use. Not particular interested at the terminals' contents, he rummaged as quietly as he could through the desks instead, looking for things like access keycards, override codes and the like. Maybe areas with their own power grid would still have their security systems active after all.

And more importantly, he needed a better weapon than the hook in his hand. But office workers wouldn't be carrying them, hopefully he would come across bodies of security personnel in his search. While he had no experience in handling Corpus energy weapons, he was comfortable with small-arms ballistics, and would very much like a small, strong blade if one were to be anywhere on the vessel.

Hmm, she thought.  Well, she wasn't going to get through this by being gung-ho and kicking the frame away from the latch and then pulling the door open - she'd need something like a piece of re-bar to do that.  Thought it would probably be better if she didn't break the door, given the skittering... thing she'd just heard.  Turning around, she looked around the hallway for either a blunt implement or anything sharp.

Inside the top desk where the body lays is a journal. It is covered in blood and partially burned, but still legible. Everything else is just a collection of office supplies and stress relievers.  The journal's cover has the words I'm sorry written on it.

The mass of wreckage in the hallway is filled with plenty of sharp objects, though most of them are still attached to the ship. One peice lays on the other side of the fallen rack, partially lodged underneath it.
