PoE Fishing

For some reason whenever I try to go fishing, i simply cannot. It's very iffy, sometimes will work but mostly not and i habe no idea why. Example, I'm able to hit the fish but it doesn't register them as caught (and yes I use the appropriate rods to do so). This is a kind of important thing to do for farming and this is limiting me from certain things in game to farm.
