The overwhelming majority of people who have already researched hema seem to be just fine with lifting the requirement for newer clans, or maybe I've just been misled by the goodwill of people in r/wf and r/researchedhema. Is the gatekeeping really coming from vets, or from DE acting (unnecessarily) as a proxy for these hypothetical vets?

It's almost like those people are participating in a discussion on a topic that interests them...weird to keep portraying it as "meaningless" and "out of nowhere" when even in your scenario these people are communicating with one another. As soon as you can hold your own in arbitrations (i.e. stay alive and contribute) you should try them out. The endo is really nice for ranking up mods, plus you get Adaptation/Rolling Guard and can sell extra copies for plat.

You can similarly disable looklinks until you're looking for fashionframe talk, at which point looklinks become meaningful. Me filtering out radshares I'm not interested in is the same as filtering out looklinks I'm not interested in.

Again stop with the filtering argument, I mentioned several times by now why it is not the same in region as it is with trade/recruit.
I turn the filter off sometimes when I want fashion suggestions, majority of looklinks are posted in response to people asking for fashionframe help. Not seeing how it's so different from trade/clan chat. Unsolicited, repeated, constant looklink spam from one person should definitely be actioned like any other type of spam.

One of the most common suggestions I see people giving new players are "disable region chat" and "learn how to use the wiki," for good reason. I don't think you can really "solve" region chat or make it a lovely and welcoming hub of education for new players just by disabling looklinks. It wasn't, before looklinks released, and has never been, in my short time playing this game (since 2016). Maybe it was better before?

Well...I used to have the same problem as you, but I fixed it using a feature given to us for this reason. I think I'm allowed to have an opinion on the matter.
Any fast-moving chat will look like spam if you're not interested in its contents. Trade chat looks like utter garbage to me until I'm specifically looking to buy/sell something - then it becomes pertinent info. Looklinks look like spam until I want fashion frame suggestions, etc.

Region chat is a catch-all hot mess, half the people in it are just using it as a chat box to look up codex items or ask kickbot where to find frame parts. I think you might be mis-remembering the quality of region chat from the pre-looklink era.
I guess I'm just not seeing the practical difference between tailoring your chat with filters vs. asking the devs to enable a blanket change for every single user. "I don't like it so nobody should be able to use it" doesn't seem very fair.

The looklink problem in region chat isn't really spam from one individual, it's the collective result of many people posting one or two at a time. It looks like spam, but no one person is spamming anything. Seems easier to just opt not to see them than to demand everyone else stop sharing them.

I practiced a couple times with Skiajati and it wasn't too bad. Mostly just a small check to see if you can read enemy movement patterns and play in a more measured manner.

You don't need to worry about what "everyone" else is doing. If you don't want to see looklinks, you have the option to filter it.

Nova has grown on me a lot. She's good for everything, and the only frame I've bothered putting an aura forma on.
My guilty pleasure is a Shield of Shadows Nekros. I just really really enjoy his whole summoner/caster aesthetic. My shadows annoy the crap out of my teammates though so I only bring him for long solo endurance stuff.

Why do the open world "set" mods have such lame bonuses, for the most part?

Gladiator and Vigilante set bonuses are quite good (and stackable on a sentinel weapon for a full set if you're so inclined).
Augur set bonus isn't fantastic but I don't think anyone uses them specifically for that, they're just quite handy little mods (though I think they recently reworked Augur mods and I was getting fat overshields from them).
Strain set would be decent if the helminth charger itself wasn't so buggy and unreliable. Especially with the Strain effect affecting the hitbox and getting the dog stuck in random doorways and under stairs constantly. Also the warframe and melee mod are kind of a big ask, I generally don't just have a spare mod slot on a frame for something like that.
Hunter set bonus is fairly useless, but Hunter Munitions is amazing.
Proton/Motus/Aero aren't from open world but they are set mods, and I can only think of 2 I use regularly (Motus Setup and Aero Vantage). I honestly couldn't tell you what the set bonuses for those are without looking.
