Aim assist is supposed to help you aiming on a target. It snaps automatically on the target when you are getting close enough.

But apparently some players have no good experience with that, so you should probably turn it off, depends how you can work with it.

Aim assist seems to do nothing other than drag your reticle away from the target you're trying to hit and on to something entirely different.

Turn it off.

This is exactly what it does.  Aim Assist tries to lead the target while aiming.  This can cause you to actually miss shots.  Especially with weapons like bows and snipers.  Because of this, I immediately turned it off as soon as I noticed the effect.

Controllers don't have the precision of a mouse. So when you aim with a controller the game will snap to enemies etc. when you are close enough.

This statement is actually not quite correct.  You can have the same amount of precision(especially if you turn off controller aim assist) as a mouse.  The difference is that the mouse is much faster at getting that precision aim. Controllers can still have precision in aiming, but it's generally slower overall than using a mouse.
