Graphics driver crashing on Earth missions?

My graphics driver keeps randomly crashing on Earth missions. I can go to any mission on Earth, including the Plains, and my graphics driver is almost guaranteed to crash at some point during the mission. Any other planet I have no problem with.

My specs are:

  • i7-7700K @ 4.20 GHz
  • 980 Ti
  • Asus Prime Z270
  • 8GB of RAM

I am running on DirectX 11 with all settings maxed out except anti-aliasing, which is off. I should also mention that my driver is up-to-date.

----------

So the crash does something like this:

  • Playing game as normal, but on Earth

  • First the audio cuts out

  • Almost immediately after the audio cuts out my primary monitor goes black

  • My computer then starts to freeze and everything on my secondary monitors (I have 3) starts to lag for a few seconds.

  • Then the secondary monitors turn black

  • My primary monitor will then recover(?) and flash this rainbow looking image

  • Then the game crashes and all other applications on my computer recover, as well as my secondary monitors
