How does the sound team create the robotic voices?

OK, I know this is an odd threat to start, but a friend and I just started a project for my colleges "beginning sound" class. My friend wants to sound like an AI, and I figured I might reach out and ask how the DE sound team goes about making characters like lotus, ordis, legs, and various others sound robotic? 

The sound program we use is adobe audition and we both have moderate experiance with it. If you guys could get back to us that would be great but if not I understand, just figured I'd ask

'Voice modulation' is thing you are searching for. The easiest way is duplicating your voice as second track, change a pitch of it a little bit and add phaser effect (should be in audition, it's in audacity)
