Hello, I played a lot many years ago when the game was still small. Then college, marriage ect.. any how I am starting to get more free time I was wondering the current state of the game meaning did it turn into huge time gate or is it investment = reward.

Kind of hard to judge since reward is quite subjective (hence, lots of debate over rewards), but time gating is pretty much limited to foundry (as it always was to my knowledge) and syndicates, including the open world ones, although discounting a few others. These do limit how much you can earn in one day, but as you progress that amount increases.

Considering the Free to Play nature, I'd say it's a good balance, but your mileage may vary.

 

That said, if you meant like EA stuff, no, nothing of that relative magnitude.
