Unusual full screen color flashes in mission

Playing with other people there are frequent full screen flashes of various color during mission.  They happen even if there is absolutely no activity in the current area.  No enemies, no players, no environmental hazards, nothing.  But the screen will still be flashing various colors, probably based on what people are doing elsewhere in the mission.  It's fine and expected when we're all grouped up and fighting together, but rather distracting when one friend is off doing the mission, while the rest of us have split up to search for caches or something.
