The prime time stream on Thursday nights is scheduled, (almost) always, to run between 6:00PM ET and 8:00PM ET (whether EDT or EST depends on the season). DE seems to always set the twitch drops to last from 6:00PM ET to 8:30PM ET, and from what I've heard the reason they do this is just in case the stream runs a few minutes over-time (which has definitely happened before) so that people can use that extra time (in the case DE runs past their planned schedule) to get more drop progress.

However, this 'extra time' is not guaranteed to be there on any given prime time stream!

Well if 2-hour long stream is standard, which genius pops the idea of 3 drops that requires 2 hours watching. Twitch drop never function responsively and people will not come to the steam on time. Normally people set notifactions and when they receive that and mange to get to the stream will always be like 5 or 10 minutes late.  Some people wait in the channel before it even went live, and many of them had no idea they need to refresh the page when stream and drop starts.  This tight window cause problem for both people who are late and being there early.  So why not just make the drop every 30 minutes? Give people some room to solve their drop issues and get some time to grab a coffe before stream.
