When the First Clan was sundered, the four elder clans had arisen:

The first is the Deva clan, the Divine, which kept to the Old Way, focusing on the development of the Mind and Soul, the Tenno inner mystical strength, and how to manifest this, using Warframes as media, as unbelievable abilities and powers. Their inherited the symbol of the First Clan, two scratches which symbolizes Brotherhood.

The second is the Naga clan, the Dragons, which embraced the Defense as a fundamental philosophy and developed powers and equipment towards this belief. They numbered many scientists, whose signature achievement is the shield system which is subsequently integrated into all Warframes. Their clan symbol is that of a shield, and is found on many modules, the most famous of which is a module that increased the effectiveness of the Warframe shield system, named Redirection.

The third is the Yaksa clan, the Ogres, which adopted the opposite of the Deva clan, choosing the Body as the first principle, emphasizing physical prowess and martial arts, striving towards the balance between form and purpose, utility and beauty. Their symbol is that of the Tenno in attack, which is found in many old manuals of martial arts of many weapon types, including Iron Phoenix, an old Tenno sword style; Grim Fury and Fracturing Wind, which are developed from unarmed combat; and Flailing Branch, which can turn any simple pole into a deadly weapon.

The fourth is the Gandharva clan, the Muses. Though lacking the distinct areas of development of the other three elder clans, they developed the techniques and skills to greatly enhance any of the technologies of the other clans. Their most significant achievement is the development of the Fusion Core, which can analyze any component created by other clans and automatically optimize and enhance it without Tenno intervention.

As time advanced, more clans splintered from the elder clans.

Within the Deva clan, unrest had arisen between the groups that believed that the Tenno Soul, the source of the Warframe powers, should be the primary aspect, versus those that believed that the Mind, focusing on tactics and strategies should be the primary aspect to use those powers. The group that adopted the latter eventually splintered to form the fifth clan, Ashura, the Tacticians. Initially, the disagreements between the two clans led to minor struggles and at one point, open conflict that shed Tenno blood. Though the two had since cooled their heads had made their peace, a not-so-subtle rivalry still occured between them.  It is ironic that despite the rivalry of their creators, the modules and equipment developed by the Ashura can greatly complement that of the Deva.

From Naga, came the sixth clan Garuda, the Roc, which adopted the philosophy "The best defense is offense", and turned their focus into technologies towards offense. Despite the apparent reversal of Naga clan's defensive philosophy, the new clan coexisted well with the parent clan, and though they do have a somewhat rivalry between then, it is of a much more friendlier though competitive one than that of the Deva and the Ashura. Just like the reverse application of their philosophy compared to that of the Naga clan, the crowning achievement of the Garuda clan is the module known as Serration. Where Naga's Redirection hinders incoming projectiles and energy beams, Serration does the opposite, making projectiles and beams travel through space with less hindrance, enhancing their speed, thus power and range, and the eventual damage caused.

From Naga again, came the seventh clan Mahoraga, the Serpents, which was mainly involved some non-mainstream and obscure researchs that will baffle even the majority of the Naga scientists. It is speculated that they may be conducting the researches in some unknown locations and eventually overwhelmed by some disaster, whether it is natural, or of their own doing. They became lost in time as nobody had head from them again. It is however noticed that the Solar Rails we know off bears similarities to known Mahoraga techonologies.

With the development of robotics, a faction within the Gandharva clan branched off to specialize in robotics and artificial intelligence. They became the eighth clan Kinnara, the Technicians. It is they who first developed the Sentinels which are eventually used by all Tenno.

Thus, these are the eight ancient clans of the Tenno, at the height of their time.

But legends say of the existance of the ninth clan. Ruma. The clan of hedonism and debauchery.

They existed only for the purpose of partying. And party they did. Every single alcohol type and flavor known throughout the solar system were brewed and distilled. However, on one partying day, one Tenno dared to distill a spirit so powerful, that it may, by chance, tear a hole in the space-time continuum within one's liver. After decades of study and refinement, he finally discovered the formula for such a spirit. One of its ingredients included a dice.

He slowly tipped the bottle over his mouth,

and drank.

The Dojo where the ninth clan previously orbited vanished. But it left something behind; so vast in knowledge and power. It does not exist in the physical realm, scattered across the known universe, but it watches, it sees. The concotion that the late Tenno created spawned a much greater intelligence that not even the most intelligent of Tenno could comprehend. It is everywhere and it controls all.

That was the day RNG was born.
