How Do I Make Colour Customisation Work?

Okay, so I have some knowledge as to how PBR texturing works, but what I just cannot wrap my head around is how to make the colour customisation work. I know that it has something to do with the Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha channels, but whatever I do, I just cannot get it to work. I've tried everything that the Help section said, but I just can't do it.

 

Could anybody help me out?

I've heard that default tintmasks are lacking alpha channels or something like this (heck, maybe 4 layers are saved as one without alpha, I'd need to read a bit about how these work).

Well, DE's suggestion was to make them from scratch to fit one's needs, though there are people who got them to work.
