How To Apply Focus Upgrades?

So I just got Madurai focus tree and upgraded it with Chimera Breath (3 lazers) and Blazing Fury (10% more slash damage for all of the mission). And after I unlocked them , nothing happened when I used them in action.

Do I actually have to upgrade them to rank 1 or what?

Also, I think the actual lazer should have the frame's energy color.

These upgrades need to be highlighted in red when viewing the upgrade tree.

They should be black when you first unlock them, click it to equip it (It'll turn red)

After you unlock them you need to activate them by clicking once again on them.

Go to the focus tree, make sure Chimera Breath and Blazing Fury are red (enabled) , not black (disabled). Click on them if they are disabled.
