A first for the series, DOOM will not be censored in Germany. It will be released fully uncut with all its gore and giblets.

Also, I love the cover art. Like that suit design is just gorgeous.

Gotta love those space marines yo >_<

On that note, if I'm remembering correctly doom is about aforementioned space marines slaying demons, a classic from when FPS gained traction. Of course, I've yet to play any of it yet, any recommendations on what to try in the franchise prior to the release of this new one, or would it be better to wait for the reboot and go in not knowing what to expect?

Go for DOOM, DOOM 2 and maybe DOOM 3. DOOM 3 is nothing like the first two as it's more of a survival horror.

But DOOM 2016 is pretty much playable without playing the other games, story isn't a very important in the series.

Story of DooM series is just basically kill demons, save earth.

There is no real need to have a fleshy story for DooM as it is better to just play it like a chill action pump shooter.

I still heavily disagree with John Carmack's statement on story in video games. What he said is incredibly stupid.

Well Doom was made when Arcade games were all the rage, and most console games were just ports of arcade games or arcade styled games.

Arcade games were built to last, and be replayed, hence the scoring systems and what not.

Doom probably was created without much story in mind, so when Doom 3 came out with it's deep plot, many older fans were turned off because it turned it into a survival horror.

Personally, I didn't like Doom 3 that much either, because I have a dislike of games that gives me a gun, yet makes me feel helpless (I hate Dead Space)

I don't really care when a game doesn't attempt to tell a story, because then it doesn't really matter. The gameplay is what's important, Doom is a good example of this.

But Carmack said "Story in video games is like a story in a porno, it's expected but it isn't needed". This is both correct and wrong, but mainly wrong. Story can make a game absolutely amazing. It lets characters become characters, it lets a new form of story telling to come forth. Imagine a Persona game without any story or little to no story.

I remember there was this version of Doom where yu get to play preset characters with backstory that reflects their ingame stats (Movespeed, health, melee damage)

But generally, I think RPGs tend to have richer story, so I usually bend towards RPGs.

Only arcade game that had a great influence on me was House Of The Dead, cos it had really good story and plot, with very bad voice overs.

I'd say to go with DOOM64 instead of DOOM 3 (I like DOOM 3 btw). It's the sequal to DOOM II and damn if it isn't a fine game.
there is a PC port called DOOM64 EX, so no need to hunt down a N64 to play the game.
