'Infection' on my Warframe's neck?

So I was playing as my Nyx and happened to notice a small pulsing purple thing on my neck, and found it on my Ember Prime as well. From region chat, it was obvious the thing was 'infestation', but any further questions i asked about what it was and what it did were ignored, leaving me very confused.

 

So! What does the infestation do? Do I have to worry about losing my warframe? Can I remove the infestation? And how do I avoid receiving it again?

My assumption is the 'cyst' is used to create the Kubrow's DNA structure.

Ah. well.... what happens if I dont drain the cyst?

I'm relatively new.... so i havent gotten through the kubrow quest, so it might take me a while....

I doubt anything happens at all.
Other than it setting you from sun to moon on your profile.

if you infect others you go dark, blah, blah.

From what I've gathered, the alignment change is more likely to be from the bugged out glast gambit choices, not the infection. I started the quest after they patched it and my alignment is right where it should be.
