Let this be 2024's first post on the topic of the severely flawed system that is Void Fissures.
A big portion of the mission types that the Fissure RNG list can roll are just plain bad or a horrible fit for the "collect reactant" gimmick (which in my opinion should also be rethought as a system, but not what this post is about). As it stand, the mission type pool (for Star Chart, not looking at Railjack) consists of Capture, Defense, Disruption, Excavation, Exterminate, Interception, Mobile Defense, Rescue, Sabotage, Spy, Survival.
Defense was a snoozefest even 5+ years ago and the game has introduced multiple better game modes that could take its place in this roster, even if it was just switching Defense to Mirror Defense. Yes, the timer-based horde-defense would be magnitudes better than hunting for some random trooper that got stuck on its own geometry. Also, when was the last time someone saw Stephano, Uranus pop up in the Fissure list and went "Oh yeah, here we go!" ?
Excavation actively punishes you for doing the objective effectively with how random it is whether you'll get the reactants in time or end up having to NOT PLAY THE OBJECTIVE while reactants decide to pop up.
Exterminate, especially when done at any sort of speed will regularly not spawn enough reactants by the time you've eliminated everything on the map.
Interception is also a coinflip with reactant, and I'm just personally biased against this mission type in general so won't go on about it.
Mobile Defense is one that should just be replaced with literally almost any newer mission type for the sole reason that it is in this middle ground where it can neither be serve as a speedrun mission nor is it an endless mission, so honestly serves no purpose in the pool, and for some reason is just rage-inducingly common.
Spy just straight up doesn't fit the whole reactant gimmick. Especially when it comes to public groups where you end up having to run back and forth between various corners of the map cause the group split (as it should, if playing the objective properly), and the reactants are therefore also scattered across the entirety of the map.
All this, while we've had the Zariman missions for over a year now, many of which would function way better as Fissure missions. Only counter-argument I can think of for not adding the Zariman missions is it wouldn't be as accessible to newer players, which is honestly a pretty weak one in my opinion as at least it would give them something else to look forward to instead of everything being thrown at them the moment they register an account. Then there's Mirror Defense and Conjunction Survival, both of which could work just fine.
But let's put aside the whole "but muh preferred game modes" rant, and look at it from a different angle. Anyone remember the player choice that Void Keys used to provide? Sure, you had to get the right key (which you still have to do except now it's relics), but at least you the player had the choice of what mission you wanted to do in whatever free time you have available once you had them, instead of hoping some slot machine would give you a satisfying option before the night was over. Why can't we as players just go and do the missions we would like? Why instead is it a damn randomized board dictating our options? Get rid of the whole randomness thing, and make it so we can go and enter whatever mission type we'd like whenever we'd like to.
Oh and please for the love of god add the "new" mission types in as options.
