In theory Windows reinstallation should help to fix dependency problems. You shouldnt downloand WannaCry protection though, it kills some of SMB-realated services/

WannaCry used EternalBlue, which exploited SMB 1.0

I wouldn't be shocked if most protection suites flat out nuked it if you aren't using the lan file sharing network features.

Not installed = the service that needs it should not exist or doesnt it at all?

It's rare to see them literately uninstalled, but I have seen it...

    Typically windows can restore them

(assuming it was bundled with that version of windows to begin with... but workstation and dependencies should be on everything i think)

I really dont care to enable workstation for a min and then disable it only to play werfreem

Yeah, it should be fine. The only problem is if you leave it enabled and it's unpatched or your running an older version.

But the same could be said for flash player... and we all know how stupid that is (i hope)

I had workstation disabled because it felt useless, I didn't need it.

I know in secure offices where the unneeded services and protocols are either uninstalled, disabled, blocked, or strictly regulated. Workstation tends to be one of those things. The only place I've seen it run loose in a professional environment was behind a firewall and a metric crap ton of real-time security stuff. Even then it was quite isolated and only used for internal work.

There's really no reason why a home user should have SMB enabled. It just increases your attack surface and does nothing for you...

(except log in to warframe, apparently... kek)

Alaestor Sry about that please can you explain me exactly what Hapend ?

this "Login failed" will be fixed ?

He said it may be fixed in the next patch. Not sure when that is. As I explained earlier, you seem to be missing dependencies for that windows service, and that's normally fine but... Well, The best thing you can do is to wait. Otherwise, you can try to find a windows OS forum and get people to help you figure out what you need to do to enable that service.

  6. Update to the situation DE's Glen has responded, and FINALLY we have some confirmation that this is not intentional.

I have tracked down at least one problem that was caused by people disabling windows services and it'll be fixed in the next hotfix.

In the mean time, if you turned of the "Workstation" service (sometimes called "LanmanWorkstation") manually I'd start with re-enabling it and trying to log-in. I haven't the foggiest idea what other problems you might cause by disabling core windows features so it wouldn't surprise me if you can break it with other monkey-business.

This got me curious tho. I am a dumfuck in IT field. But all that I've learned from this thread and from my friend all point out that this is an absolute stupid thing. How could they allow something this standard to pass?

I'm in a group with a lot of IT professionals and experts, and our best guess is this was something used for internal testing and overlooked upon release. (we could try to figure out more, but DE has a habit of banhammering reverse engineers and dataminers... with semi-good reason, to be fair). As I mentioned earlier, they could have bypassed a load balancing server (or something else?) that would talk to their backend with SMB to auth, and then when they bypassed it, the client needed to use SMB.

To be honest, many issues like this are VERY easy to overlook, and that's no problem... My big issue is, they weren't treating it like a bug. If SMB was intended behavior (which was my conclusion as they kept deleting and moving bug reports)... Man i was losing my mind over here, like "wtf??" ... but it appears to in fact be an error. Which is what I first guessed.

Frankly, I just sighed a BIG sigh of relief when Glen responded...

Thank you so much for the response

Sorry I was like "NO" earlier... Home users really shouldn't be running these services, and frankly my frustration was at it's peak due to the lack of DE's acknowledgement on the issue (until now). My apologies.

Holy crap an actual reply. Thank you @[DE]Glen

Thank you for looking into this. That bug was introduced only with the latest patch and didn't exist previously. Some of my friends (professional programmers and security experts) guessed it was due to the bypassing of a load distribution system and collecting your servers to the net in anticipation of the launch). Also, the service needs only to be running at login.

Disabling or blocking these services is standard practice in non-enterprise environments, or on networks with poor or no security (like the lack of a dedicated firewall). To be honest this is the first time I've ever seen it break something that wasnt enterprise or commercial software.

For LOGIN fails: If you've manually disabled Windows services like LanmanWorkstation try turning them back on one at a time and try again

    @DeSteve

edit: disregard. Glen's response has relieved my built-up frustration. (a little feed back goes a long way guys!)

The lack of communication on this issue was pathetic to say the least. Why the hell are you requiring SMB to log in? From a security standpoint this is insane. But saying this is INTENDED BEHAVIOR? you guys actually f***ing meant to use SMB for a games login screen? WHAT THE HELL? The only other time I've seen SMB used in the gaming industry was for patching a WoW private server... Are you actually telling me DE has the competence of some dude in his moms basement?  The security experts and fellow devs I've spoken with are absolutely floored. I feel like this is a practical joke! Fix this. This is moronic.

So for some stupid reason my workstation requires both SMB 1 and 2. I'll check to see if it can run without 1 tomorrow.

okay... I'm pretty sure mine has 1 disabled, but it's hard to tell with SMB sometimes.

If this requires SMB 1.0 my mind is f*cking BLOWN

It's completely beyond help and microsoft patched it out in win7 and hasnt supported it since win8

Edit: Also, please post SMB related issues here

This is truly outrageous.  Truly truly TRULY outrageous!

Looks like I'm skipping playing WarFrame till DE fixes this issue.

So far DE hasn't confirmed or denied if this is a bug... or otherwise acknowledged this at all.

As such, I'm not sure if they will "fix" it. My post on SMB is currently burried somewhere as it has no replies, and the only other post like it was moved to the Discussion section (indicating it may not have been a bug?).... Welp.

ok..... so i should definitely turn it off and keep it off, with only turning it on in certain scenarios?

someone said that the problem was "fixed" for windows 10 so im just asking,

Known public exploits are patched, but people are always finding more... It's just unnecessary to leave it on.

To be fair, yes, you can use SMB securely, assuming it's up to date (which is incredibly rare) and SMBv1 is disabled. But... This is just bad practice. SMB is a massive attack surface. Encouraging your install base to require this is unimaginable. Hell, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single example in the game industry of where this has been done before.

  14. As the OP in that post states, we've figured out the cause.... But it isn't a good fix.
You need to enable the Workstation service. DE hasn't yet confirmed nor denied this is a bug.

FGL? You mean the guys who monetize mobile games or something else?

something else xD Future Gadget Lab (the name was inspired by an anime, but is just a group of friends and associates who have common interests. Most of whom are professionals or enthusiasts in IT fields)

Edit: i should add, none of them play warframe but me. But I introduced them to the situation and mentioned what kind of update was going on and so they seem to agree that what I quoted is a likely cause.
