They were terraforming Tau because Origin was too crowded and they want to move as many as possible as fast as possible. The normal sci-fi explanation of colony ships would be that most are in cryo pods and asleep so they can be packed in tightly for travel efficiency. And an awake crew maintaining everything. Right now there are ~8 billion on earth. 8,000,000,000 nine zeros here. The Zariman colony ship is pretty big. And you only need room for players? 50,000,000 accounts? And we have a lot of cryo pods depicted in game modes so pods are a thing. I'd say its completely plausible that there is enough potential void infused children and previously crazy dead parents for any amount of players. Not that you have to explain every single account as only tens of thousands play at any given time. But there is a way to sci-fi babble an explanation.
