I already knew the correct runes and the order, I had simply been waiting for the lich to show up for several missions to finish him off. When he was downed, I successfully used my parazon on him. When he was downed the second time I did it again. However, the third time it seemed to start me from the second rune again - and told me the rune was wrong. I died, the lich disappeared.
