Account security seems to have been compromised as well. People randomly getting their steam wallet balance wiped, email associated with their accounts changed (sometimes multiple times if they change it back), and games being added to their steam shopping carts without them doing it.

The Phantom Squad on twitter also said, they will be shutting down PS4/XB1 Servers. Along with Minecraft as well.

People say whatever they want. The point isn't that other services got DDoS, the point is that steam got hacked. DDoS can be done by any idiot with the right program, you don't even need a botnet to do it. To hack through layers of security and expose everyones accounts at random is something that requires skill and effort, and it goes to show just how poor the security of the steam service really is. DDoS =/= hacking.

I mostly wonder, if they are able to hack into steam (allowing users to even see others people accounts), and ddos PS4/XB1, and Minecraft Servers on the same day (Christmas day). Then what's next to happen?

Well firstly the DDoS will get recognized by the server monitors and the IP of the user will get permabanned and likely face court charges.

As for the hack of steam, that one is a lot more of a criminal case. That's gonna end in steam having to do serious damage control like when PSN's account data got compromised years ago. I'd expect that steam will probably give some valve games and/or large discount coupons to try and settle things with it's users.

The major issue with the steam case is that it also affects the payment access of the user base, when it happened to PSN it was only a small scale release of username and personal details. Passwords and purchasing info were not accessed.

VPN cannot be detected, steam cannot simply ban.

All they can try to do is improve flood protection and throw steam servers down if needed.

This has nothing to do with VPN, steam, or automatic detection. DDoS is generally detected by maintainance staff, due to the ever evolving nature of the programs that are used. Also steam is not being DDoS, PSN and XBL were, steam has been hacked.

A cache error is not hacking either.

Heh. Although I also use steam, I have to laugh. And everyone assumes steam is secure because its a PC service.

But that's not the case at all.

I don't see the point of people saying "haha, take THAT, Steam users, you got haxxed after all!" when basically every other service has had the same thing happen, and then become mysteriously silent when it happens to them.
