A few more failures preceed the next success, bringing the total to 12 and 3, respectively.

After the latest failure, a man whose body turned into pure metal, all but one of the remaining volunteers shakily leave the room. The last volunteer fingers the badge nervously.

Not very different from the previous batch, considering the statistical error Therese thought while watching the presumable end of the event.

"Indeed." Felicity says. "I have a few notes from back then, and a few memories, but there are still gaps."

"It's strange indeed. From the few memories I recollect from the time my powers are relateable to my liking of music, but Cyria always seemed like a much to quiet type to be a nove back then."

The last volunteer fidgets for a few more minutes before finally entering the chamber. The light flares and instead if a scream you hear a soft gasp.

The young woman is coated in golden energy, pusling the same frequency as a shade that has entered the room. The shade seems to distort and fizzle, while the woman falls to her knees. The void lens retracts and the woman begins breathing deeply. The shade smiles for a moment, before shattering into a rain of golden particles.

By now, Therese seen many outcomes of the exposure, but this particular scene was, perhaps, the strangest of them all. What exactly happened to the volunteer? What was the animated void imprint exactly doing? Were they two familiar or even relatives? Quite a lot of questions in a short amount of time that is.

The assembled Tenno seem to share your confusion. You can see Felicity and an unknown Tenno both looking at the scene. The Oro-keepers are conversing amongst themselves in hushed tones, as the woman staggers to the obelisk.

... Is she one of those oro keepers or something? She thought and scratched her nape

The Chroma wipes some dust off the rough edges of the rough hole and gestures inside.

"Alright, all we need is the rope then and we should be good to go."

The Chroma reaches inside of the hole and tugs at the length of cable inside.

"Seems strong enough to hold the weight, just have to put a good knot in it and make sure to hold on tight then."

The Chroma steps out of the way.

Jas and Dixon both look at eachother, then hold out their hands. After an unseen count both "throw".

Jas throws a rock.

Dixon throws a....

Vulcan hand symbol.

"What the Hek is that?" Jas asks.

"The Spock." Dixon says. "It's highly illegal, but impossible to counter."

"That sort of trickery should serve you well, scout." Jas says, motioning to the hole.

"But I won." Dixon says.

"Yes." Jas says. "You won the right to explore the deep dark hole."

Dixon grumbles and makes his way towards the cable.

((Goddem finger slip))

The Operator looks on in quiet amusement  as the one called Dixon approaches to fasten the rope.

"Hey, look on the brighside."

All that can be seen of the Operator over the shoulder of the Chroma is everything from the bridge of it's nose upwards.

"If there was anything truely vicious in there, it would have likely erupted forth from the gap the moment we showed up."

The Chroma gives an extremely awkward pat on the back.

"Good luck?"

It says as it disappears over the shoulder and the Chroma assumes a ready stance.

Dixon gulps audibly.

"Yes." He says, before cloaking. "But there are several species of ambush predator that would love such a hole."

He shudders and cloaks, you see the rope fasten around the rock and then go taut. The last thing you hear before Dixon descends into the darkness is a fervent "Please oh please don't let it be giant antlions."

As you travel down the rope, the repeating mechanical noises assail you from all directions despite not seeing anything in the surrounding darkness, multiple versions of the same exact thing. A grinding sound, a loud clang, a hiss, a clink, a beep of a differing pitch, and then a reversal of the entire process.

Halfway down the rope, you find yourself suddenly enveloped in a blue light and, in addition, completely unable to move. It is as if every single muscle in your body has clenched at once and refuses to relax.

Melanie seems as perplexed as you and begins to walk towards Felicity, who is still typing away on a holo-pad.

Therese followed silently, preferring to observe and estimate the situation before clinging in.

Felicity looks up as you approached.

"Ahh major." She says. "You made it."

She slips the holo-pad into her robes.

"This was unexpected." She says. "A shade sacrificing itself to save a volunteer... I can think of only one precedent."

"Unexpected indeed. And now there is a huge field for theories and field testing. If the law of the energy conservation is true, then there would be problems reassembling this void specter"

"Theories, yes." Felicity says. "Testing... well..."

The argument between the Oro-keepers grows more heated. Ryoko and Darrin seem to agree on something, while Mira and Alan remain silent. Tak however seems vehemently opposed to whatever is suggested, shaking his head.

"Problem is once a shade is damaged like that, it cannot be reformatted." Felicity says. "It is gone, a loss that will not be taken lightly."

Ulf bumped his grineer pal and whispered "I hope she washed her hands before making it", not particularly hinting on the hostesses latest reply about her involvement with the railroads service.

As you speak, a voice seems to drown out your words. It is emotionless and crackles with thick static, and yet it words seem to give the appearence of emotion.

"Hold st(static). . . 9 new species of bact(static). . . uld it be."

There is a slight sizzling sound before the blue light fades. You find yourself still clenched as you were before, but can actually feel unused muscles relax.

"What was THAT"

Echoes the Operator's voice down the shaft.

Therese looked around, noticing the argument going on by the other side of the hall. She nodded at the group.

"I'm ready to bet a chocolate roll that they are now discussing the whole "testing" and "odds improvement" part and its possible repercussions out there. Should we interfere?"

Alan notices you both and motions you over.

"It would appear we have no choice." Felicity says, solemnly, walking over to them.
