It's not even a "translation" really, it's the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "glass" (because it IS the English word glass, it's a loanword). To make matters worse, shortening it to "Gara" is literally saying "Gla" in English.

Ga = G (or more accurately the "guh/gah-lass" sound in glass)
ra = la
su = ss

DE basically went English -> Japanese -> English

Right, maybe translation isn't the right word to use, *localization would fit more.
