They look attached by the spike to me. If you can get a clearer picture, maybe on a higher contrast background, we might be able to see it better. I personally think it looks cool (using it with the Sunder helmet is the first time I've ever liked Proto), but I'm not sure if DE wants it to be this way (especially the bugged armor).
