    Greed is an ugly thing.

  2. The very fact that this thread was started at all proves you wrong. If you where right it wouldn't have started because no one would say it was.

    EXCEPT SEVERAL OF US ARE.

Several people being ignorant of the way language evolves and rallying to make a mountain out of nothing doesn't = proof.

The fact is if you went up to 100 people in the street and asked them, they would have no idea of the dark history of this word.

That's because it no longer means that.

Feel free to test it to prove my point.

  3. It doesn't need to exist in every day usage.  That's not the point of "context."

People often say %&^ to refer to a cigarette.  Does that mean we've moved on from "%&^"?

    It. Has. Evolved.

    That is it.

The word %&^ has multiple meanings. It means a cigarette in the colloquial English. It's also a type of food. It's also a derogetory term to describe a homosexual.

However, it is currently evolving to ignore the sexuality of a person, and be a more general insult. Most people use it today to describe someone who is being "a pussy".

Eventually, it will move passed its description of homosexual people entirely. This is language evolving.

  4. It is when the context is sexist, and in this case it is.  In many cases it is.

It's used to describe both men and women equally. There is a balance to its modern usage.

If a person is being sexist, then ALL their words are sexist in the context. That doesn't mean we should ban all language because sometimes people are sexist....

  5. Evidence for any of these things, besides the female friends? Where is such a thing a proven fact?

because I can point to the links that the other guy on my side has provided and ALSO the experience of a professor of mine who has been studying subjects such as these for 50+ years and has never given any leeway on the weight of the meaning of this word and its offensive nature.

Even if it is a real, supported medical condition, don't you find it just a little ugly that the attitude towards it is "Oh somebody just fill her and shut her up?" throughout history? Even if it has nothing to do with an actual presence of the medical impetus?

    The. Word. Has. Evolved.

You need to accept that, and move on with your life.

  6. No not the end.

No, not the end.  It's weird how you're bringing up the various uses of this word but are ignoring another context in which it's used.  All you're doing is saying that aspect doesn't exist, and I'm sorry but it does.  I suppose this might be the end, though, because I'm not sure there's a point in continuing this exchange if you won't accept that.

The framing is that a woman was kidnapped and supposedly tortured, is still wearing the bonds that kept her, and becomes violent and scary because of her experience, and that is the context by this word is being used in.

It's used to describe ANYONE who loses control of their emotions, so when it's used to describe a "hysterical women" it's used just as often to describe a "hysterical man".

This "other" context doesn't exist in every day, contemporary usage. It's not a factor. The history doesn't count. Its outgrown that.

  7. I hate to point to Wikipedia but here I go.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hysteria

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_hysteria

And again I point to the hysterical woman trope, which still exists today.

You can not possibly get away from the fact that this word and everything surrounding it is mired in sexual discrimination and to this day holds gendered connotations.  You can claim otherwise all you want,  and perhaps there is a broader use of the word today, but that doesn't mean the sexist associations just disappeared.

I can claim it because it's true, it has nothing to do with gender discrimination in its modern usage. It may ahve been rooted in that, but language evolves and it's used just as often to describe both sexes.

A hysterical person is just someone who loses control of their emotions.

    Man or Women.

The colloquial use to describe a funny person, too.

You really do need to get over it. Some words have a dark history. Language evolves.

    The end.

  8. I'm still shocked that they picked this word in particular.  Any other word would have sufficed.  This was the very worst possible choice with the most gendering baggage attached.

If this was a male frame it would have been called Warpath or some S#&$.  I'm desperately hoping this was a mistake or a momentary lapse in judgement or something because I don't want to think DE would be that insensitive.

    You're being ridiculous.

The word is no longer used in the way you're worried about.

    It is not an issue.

  9. Alright, if you want to play that game then the word "Bad" is also an offensive word.

As it derives from the Old English word: Baeddel, which was a derogitory insult insult torwards Transgendered people or Feminine men.

So you hear that guys? Don't use the word "Bad" or you might offened some LGBTWTFBBQ Linguists.

    Or.....

Maybe we can just not be so thin-skinned and not give a damn.

Where I live at the N-word is literally used as a term of endearment and as a greeting on a regular basis.

    And everything is perfectly fine.

Nobody is offended, and nobody is partaking in Hate crimes or racist activities.

I can say from personal experience

If you trivialize the word, you trivialize the hate behind it.

    Exactly.

  10. I actually was not the one arguing etymology, that was the OP.  I brought up the very contemporary trope applied to female characters being violent and unable to control their emotions exaggerated to the point of insanity, and how this is an extension or at least a reflection of that misogynistic garbage.

    How ridiculous.

The word hysterical is used to describe a person who is has a strong emotional outburst, this applies to both male and female.

It is also used in the colloquial sense to describe someone who is hilarious "you're hysterical" implying they're so funny that it's difficult to control your laughter.

    It is absolutely, 100% fine.

  11. That's a very good point to raise, especially given the discussion surrounding this particular frame.

    And then there's this :http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HystericalWoman

If one were to come at this from a gender studies point of view, this was practically the worst possible choice for an ability name.

Do some research on etymology, particularly modern words with dark histories.

This word does not mean what it use to.

    It's fine.

  12. That doesn't excuse their use. It's true hysteria isn't on the same level as rasist epithets, but it is still used today in it's negative connotations, so they shouldn't use it.

Actually, it absolutely excuses the use.

    Because language evolves.

It doesn't mean today what it meant then.

You need to acknowledge that, and move on.

  13. Agreed. The moment I heard the name my brain skipped a beat. Interesting note, the word itself is from the Greek word hysteros which means uterus. The greeks thought that the uterus moved around and attacked other organs, causing all sort of maladies.

Way to fall into one of the most sexist tropes ever DE.

    Nope.

    Evolution of language.

Lots of words have dark histories, but they have nothing to do with their modern usage.
