Suddenly, there is no noise. The little shop filled with an uneasy silence. Not even a whisper could be heard. Then a stomping noise rang out.

The mysterious figure shambled inside. Blood soaked its body, particularly around a puckered scar on its leg.

It was the Nidus.

The Nidus detects the trio, and recognizes Nana. A soft, menacing growl could be heard emanating from it. Sharp, infected bone shards eject from its knuckles and feet. The Nidus then launches itself at a extreme speed towards the survivors.

This was in some way, her fault. The major infected would have been drawn to the firefight in the grocery store one way or the other, but by fleeing in this direction, she had led it to them in the first place.

Thinking quickly, Nana mustered whatever nerve she had left and dashed away from the man's vehicle - the major infected wanted her, and she couldn't allow it to damage their only escape during its charge and possibly hit the wounded man. But at the same time, surely she could not use the same trick twice and dodge its charge again, for the bony blades it bore would likely catch her if she tried to duck or roll out of the way. Unslinging her sledgehammer in a fluid motion, she assumed a baseball batter's focused stance and squinted her eyes, poised to receive the major infected's strike. There would be too much power in its charge for her to stop fully, but with her weapon in hand, she did have the advantage of a longer reach. She'd just have to trust the weird partly-infected guy with too much ammo to actually be able to finish this thing after she had done her part.

Its charge was blindingly fast, driven by a primal fury and thirst for carnage. With all of her might, Nana swung her hammer like a golf club, driving the 5 kilogram steel head to collide with her target's center of gravity.

Zachary was shocked and somewhat annoyed at the oncoming challenger.

*He rolls his eyes and laughs as he looks at the GM's invisible mental camera*  "Oh, so now you send HIM along, huh?  Well little do you know..."

*Zachary walks toward the beast menacingly*

"WE'RE not trapped in here with him..."

*He whips out his dual machetes and does an impressive spin or two with both*

"He's trapped in here... WITH US."

He lunges at the beast, laughing with an almost horrific cackle as he throws his corrosive shuriken and begins slashing at the beast with incomprehensible speed, performing 360 degree slashes, and many other melee maneuvers, making himself look like a living blender.  One must wonder if the infection for which he possessed was really as much of a disease... as it was a physical upgrade.

The Nidus is thrown back, covered in wounds that are spurting blood, encasing Zachary and Joshua However, the wounds are already rapidly healing. In very little time, the Nidus is completely healed and furious.

The Nidus gets up, and screeches. It’s antennae rises from its skull, and begins to move. A noise only heard by infected starts to be produced. Nearby infected begin to rally to its location.

Joshua observes the Nidus. A look of familiarity quickly passes across his face. Then, Joshua turns his head to Nana and says:

”We need to get out of here, before that thing kills of infected us all.”

She didn't need telling twice. Without ballistic firepower or an actual weapon, there really wasn't much she could do to hold such a powerful infected off. Nana jumped into the vehicle with the wounded man, then shouted at the infected man who was still outside.

"Get us out of here!"

*Zachary runs towards the vehicle while spraying the Nidus with what he has left for ammo.  He finally jumps in, slams the door shut, turns the key, and puts the pedal to the metal*

"Ladies and Gentlemen, fasten you seat belts, we're gonna have a bumpy ride."

After about 20 minutes you finally arrive at his strange base.

*Zachary carefully carries Joshua over his shoulder*

"Don't worry, buddy!  We're home free.  Gonna have some pain meds, a nice little bed to sleep on, food, the works.  Just hang tight..."

*He heads over to the blast door, which is locked with a electronic keypad.  He types in the combination, and the doors slide open.  You then walk into a little elevator, which then takes you down inside.  Finally, the sliding doors to the elevator open*

"Welcome to my humble little home," he says with a chuckle.

The base is quite the sight.  A large computer can be seen in the enormous hall in the far back, to the far right, a massive gun rack with an abundance of weapons, huge supply crates of ammo, and Kevlar armor on multiple dummies.  To the left, you see a large tv with tables nearby, and further left is a huge kitchen with industrial kitchen appliances, a massive meat locker, and some of the finest cooking utensils.

*You enter the hall and take a right*

As you walk into the room, you see a sizable hospital with multiple sickrooms, Emergency Rooms, and a few operating rooms, complete with the finest in medical technology.

*Zach takes Josh to one of the ERs and lays him down on the bed*

"Hold on, buddy.  I'll be right back."

*He walks out of the room for a brief moment and returns with some pain meds and a paper cup of water*

"Here," he says as he hands them to you.

Joshua observes Zachary and the pills, suspicious of The man’s intent. Although thankful for the rescue, Joshua believed the man desired something from him. After a short time, he decided to trust this strange man.

Well, a pain killer shouldn’t hurt,  thought Joshua, and besides, if the man wants something, he earned it. He shouldn’t know about he armory or your past. As long as you don’t talk about the armory, you’ll be fine.

Joshua popped the painkiller into his mouth, and washed it down with water. He gave a short nod of thanks, glad that the painkiller soothed the pain in his wounds. Joshua’s eyes grew heavy, then he nodded off to sleep.

Nana had trouble believing what she was seeing, but their current safety wasn't as comforting as it should. Just when survivors had thought that the law enforcement, military and secret service had all but fallen, she managed to escape the jaws of death and was now standing in some kind of base full of provisions, arms and a hospital? She hadn't the faintest idea who the partially-infected man was, but he was apparently rich enough to afford this facility. It was rather eerie that nobody else was around though, when the place looked like it should be sheltering as many refugees and injured as it could. And the man himself was a rather odd fellow, talking to nobody and jerking his head in random directions. Perhaps the infection was taking its toll on his mental state, definitely something to worry about. She made a mental note of what she had observed as she paced past outside the emergency wards where the injured man had been taken.

That one was also one to worry about. He was already wounded when they arrived, and it couldn't have been anything other than the infected who could have done it. The vile strain could be creeping through his veins at this moment, twisting him as it had so many others. For a moment, Nana could see the agonized faces of her men writing at her feet, telling her how much they hurt. That they couldn't hold on for much longer, that they loved their families and children. Her eyes swimming, she clutched at the tool that had granted them their sweet release, deriving some comfort from her grip on the fiberglass rod handle. Would this man that had just escaped death have to face the same fate? Could this part-infected man actually save him? He didn't look like a surgeon or doctor, but at this point there was little she could do but pray.

Zachary gave a sigh of relief.  Although he assumed he'd have to do stitches, he carefully checked the bandaged wounds, and they seemed to have healed pretty quickly.  With that, he quietly closed the door and let him have his needed sleep.

*Now outside the room, he clasps his hands and rubs them together somewhat awkwardly as he turns to Nana*

"So, uh, I should probably show you to your new room.  Right this way!"

You follow him back into the hall then go to the hallway just opposite of the hospital.  The first room he shows you has two bunk beds.

"Well, here's room number one!  Not exactly the Hilton, but at least it's somewhere to sleep."

*He gestures to a sizable drawer near the beds*

"You can store your clothes in there.  We also have some spare uniforms.  Hopefully we have one that'll fit ya."

*He then shows you to another room a few doors down, which turns out to be a bathroom with multiple stalls*

"This is the first bathroom.  Unfortunately we were a team of men, so there wasn't exactly a ladies room, but I can slap a makeshift sign up for ya."

*He then heads out of the room and goes further down the hall, leading to a laundromat*

"Here's our washers and dryers.  I think we still have some laundry soap... Ah, here it is.  Anywho, that's pretty much it for living quarters."

*He pauses for a moment*  "Man, I'm parched.  Want somethin' to drink?"

Nana had several questions, but now wasn't the time. She left them unasked and followed him as he gave her the tour of his "humble little home". It was rather concerning that nobody else seemed to be around despite how many people could have been sheltered here, however. But a drink was much needed, and she obliged his suggestion.

"Yes actually. That'll be nice." she replied, already half-expecting him to lead her to some kind of alcohol wing or bar facility or something. How much went into building this place?

The lights flickered, as if drained of their power. For a moment, it seemed only to be a minor problem. Then suddenly, the building fell into darkness, all electric power gone.

Anything could now hide inside the compound. The corridors were plunged into darkness, enabling anyone to hide successfully. Also, all defenses were powerless, which gave any infected a chance to creep into the facility unnoticed.

.....

Joshua woke with his heart thumping. What was he doing? Trusting a stranger? He could be anywhere! He no longer had a sense of location anymore.  He pressed his fingers into the sides of his head, frustrated with his idiocy. Then, he felt a sense of dread.

“Where is the black box?” He muttered to himself.

He felt inside his jacket pocket, and grasped a little black box. The box was thin and long, similar to the boxes where syringes were stored.

“Good, we still have it,” he sighed to himself, “Now, time to get out of here and find the exit.”

He stood up, pulled his magnum out of its holster, and grasped his flashlight. Then, he walked out side of the ER room.

Zachary glares at the GM's invisible mental camera.  "Oh yeah, REEEAALLL funny.  And hardly realistic considering the money I spent on the power system and BACK UP SYSTEMS I INSTALLED!!"

*He rolls his eyes and turns to Nana*  "I'll be right back..."  *He pulls out a flashlight and heads back to the hall with the computers, where another room with generators are located*

With a few flicks of a few switches, the facility flickers back to life.

*He turns back to Nana with a sigh of relief*  "Ahh, ok.  Now, about that drink..."  *He leads Nana to a large kitchen island bar, with glasses overhead, both casual and exquisite*

"Were you looking for anything in particular?  We've got coffee, tea, soda, milk, ciders, fruit punches, and other fruit juices.  We DON'T however have alcoholic beverages, since we found them too risky on duty."

*He notices Josh is awake and well and waves him over*

"Oh hey, you're awake!  Feelin' better?  C'mon, sit down and have a drink!  Got plenty of beverages to choose from!"

The ominous flickering was unnerving, and Nana certainly did not appreciate being plunged into darkness within a relatively confined indoor space. Her headlamp flickered on as he vanished into the generator room, and such was her newfound survival instinct that her hammer was already firmly gripped in both hands when he returned. With an unsure grunt of acknowledgement, she allowed herself to be led away, but did not sheathe her pitiful weapon. Definitely not quite in the mood for a drink now.

As they stepped into the kitchen, they were joined by the man that they had rescued from earlier. He was also up on his feet - whatever treatment he received was evidently rather effective, perhaps the weird infected guy was a better surgeon than she assumed. But she noticed that he too, had his weapon out with a flashlight in hand. She caught his eye and gave him an understanding nod. Perhaps he shared the same sense that they were perhaps not as safe as they appeared to be, not now.

Joshua found the man unnerving. Maybe he was paranoid, but he did not trust the man for two reasons. The first reason was: the man was obviously infected. The man’s arms were a steel color, and had blade-like pultrusions. The second reason was that the man seemed to be mentally unstable. Joshua remembered hearing he man’s manic joy of killing back at the store.

When Joshua heard the man call him over, he knew he had no choice. He would have to hope that the man was stable. He wished to escape, but now was not the time.

slowly, Joshua walked over, stowing his flashlight. However, he did not holster his magnum. If that man became violent, he wanted to be prepared.

Joshua observed the lady standing near the man. The lady gave a curt nod to him. Perhaps the lady did not trust the infected man as well? Hopefully so, he could use all the allies he could get. He would have to talk to her sometime. Maybe she knew much about the compound they were both in.

Zachary looked at the two quizzically as the both seemed rather cautious around him.  He couldn't help but chuckle at their display.

"Guys, it's alright!  The power's back on!  Everything's good, relax!  Put your stuff away!"

*He looks at the two and goes over the list of beverages again*

Odd fellow as the infected man was, it was no lie that he had helped them out and was offering his hospitality, suspicious as its origins were. She didn't want to appear rude, and it was the least she could do to return his grace.

With an obvious effort, she obliged him and put away her sledgehammer, slinging it across her back. "Just water, thank you. My name's Nana by the way."

Perhaps the stress from over the past few days was getting to her, but she couldn't bring herself to relax at this moment.

Joshua could not bring himself to relax. Although he was in a relatively safe place, he had a nagging feeling that something was afoot. Yes, the man gave him hospitality and saved him from death, but Joshua was sure that the man had suspicious motives. For now, he will have to play along.

Hesitantly, Joshua stowed his magnum. He found a seat and plopped onto it.

”Thanks for saving me back there,” said Joshua, “And if you don’t mind, I would like a water also.”

"Here you go."  *He hands the two of you your refreshments*

Outside of the compound, there is a horde of infected. The screeches  were loud, choking out any other noises. The horde is made of many different, dangerous types of infected.

The horde slowly claws their way into the compound. The defenses are holding out for the moment, but they will fall soon.

....

Joshua raises the glass to his lips, glad that he has something to drink. Any form of nourishment is hard to find, due to every shop and farm ether shutting down or destroyed. He takes a sip then freezes. A voice, new and alien, echos in his mind.

Join us, we wish you to grant you a new shape,” the voice declares, “You helped us create our greatest brethren and armed them.”

His hand shaking, Joshua lowered his glass. What was this voice? Where did it come from?

*Zachary notices your frightened appearance*  "You hear them too, don't you?" he asks with a knowing look.

Within your mind, you hear him laugh maniacally at the other voice.

"YOU FOOLS!  Little do you know I have already given him new shape, and the infection that was meant to kill him as only empowered him.  You apparently have not learned of the old saying, "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger."  Just like me, we have taken what would've made us mindless beasts and turned us into efficient killing machines!  The sword which you raised against us SHALL PEIRCE YOUR VERY HEARTS!  HAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAA!!!!!!"

*Zachary has been looking at you with an assuring look for the entirety of his mental speech*

*He notices Nana's look of confusion*  "You hear them?  Some friendly little infected neighbors are comin' over to say hello.  Let's give 'em a nice, warm welcome..." he says as he heads over to the weapon rack and grabs some ammo for his SMGs.

*He grabs some Kevlar armor and helmets, complete with visors, and hands them to the two of you*

"By the way, you guys ever shot a rifle before?" he says as he grabs two Assault Rifles from the racks.

Nana couldn't judge how large the horde without visual contact, but from the noise it sounded like a third of the city was upon them. And here their... benefactor Zachary was staring rather creepily at the other man who appeared to be in visible discomfort. The infected screeching in the distance was probably harrowing to him given his recent experience.

She accepted the armoured vest which her torso filled well, but waved away the helmet in favour of her hard hat and its headlamp. She was also unsure about the rifle, though she could see the merit in carrying a spare gun if they needed it.

"Never used one, and are you sure we should be staying? Not like I'd know where we could try escaping to, but there's three of us against gods know how many of them."

Joshua hated being here. He hated being trapped inside the compound. He hated the voice. It continued to call to him, to change. It pleaded him to take the black box out of his pocket, and to inject its contents into his bloodstream.

Joshua accepted the Kevlar armor. Even thought it was a little loose, he knew it would protect him in some fashion.

Anxiously, Joshua looked at Nana and Zachary, wondering if they knew somehow what was stowed inside his jacket. If they realized that he carried syringes filled with tennocyte, he knew he might have to spill their blood.

Quickly, Joshua put on his jacket, and said:

”We better get out of here. We won’t last long in here. Zachary,  do you have any vehicles?”

*Zachary turned to Nana*  "Well, today you're gonna learn how.  I'm a Navy Seal, me and my teammates took on about as many men as there are infected out there, and they were all ARMED.  These things don't have guns, which is to our advantage.  Also, should things go south, I have the sentries working again, so we'll be fine if a big one comes along."

*He turns to Josh* "We've still got the tank out front, but I also have some vehicles in the garage a little ways away from the elevator entrance.  We could take them by surprise from there."

You follow him into a hallway behind the massive computers which leads to another elevator.  After finally reaching the top floor, you are greeted by the sight of five ATV's with built in turrets:

d46zfvg-634bc157-0083-46a6-b6ce-0797a8b5

"Ok," Zachary says as he heads over to the control panel to the massive garage door.  "What do you want to learn first, the rifle, or the turret?"

Nana wasn't expecting battle-ready military vehicles that had apparently been maintained and serviced for this moment, but she wasn't about to ask questions now. Wherever Zachary was receiving all these assets from was a matter for another time. At least the jeep looked rather speedy. The turret position looked rather exposed however, and she wasn't feeling confident about what to do should it jam up on her. But that did apply to a gun too.

"Not sure how much time we have to 'learn' something, but if we're getting up in that - I think I'll ride shotgun. Would I have to shoot from that seat?" she replied, urgency building in her voice.

She had little idea what a 'navy seal' was, but it sounded like military from a foreign country. So this Zachary likely wasn't a local either. She threw her suspicions aside for some renewed confidence in his combat ability, he had that going for him at least.

A loud but distant crash could be heard inside the garage. The sound of crushing metal soon followed. Then, there were steps, from an innumerable amount of creatures. There could only be one thing causing the sounds.

The infected were inside the compound, rushing to kill their prey.

"Ooh, this outta be interesting... looks like they broke into the elevator.  We better lure them out before they figure out how to go to the bottom floor." he says with a slight chuckle.
