They're the new particle system they introduced a while back for non-nvidia users/console users. The heavy gunner slam particles are physx, though. Not sure if it matters, but even before the rework, the spores being cast and exploded would usually lead to big performance drops, even when you weren't directly looking at them (though with a smaller impact on performance when you weren't looking but noticeable drops).
