People don't buy them to use- that'd be absurd. They buy them as a collectors item, or as an alternate form of "currency" (or in some cases an investment, betting the price will continue to rise to make a profit by selling later) in the game. Kind of like how TF2 Mann co Keys are to refined, reclaimed, and scrap metals- only their roles have been reversed.
