Why doesn't this give you an extra chance to scan feral Kavat when you kill them with it?

You already have it fully scanned. Yeah. It sucks. All the ways to get multiple scans out of Kavats only work for the short time where you don't have 20/20 scans or whatever you need to have all its information in the codex. Synthesis scanner can get you 2 genetic data from one kavat once in a while though.

Not true.  It'll still try for DNA if you've completed it's entry.  I recomend using Synthesis Scanners, perferably with the Sol Widget on hand to keep from running dry, but scan them first with the SS if you uave all upgrades.

You mean after scanning it normally? Because you've already scanned it. You're not supposed to be able to get multiple scans from a single target (other than the random chance to get a double scan from the Synthesis Scanner with the upgrade). The Heliocor will scan as logn as you didn't already scan that particular enemy, and you can get Kavat DNA from it.
