Not understanding New Power

Hello, 

  I'm here because theres something about my Operator I don't quite understand. I have to do the Octavia Quest and I can do it decently with some struggle thou. I know my 5th key power thing :P does stuff to the sentients, but I don't know exactly. I've seen a video one time where someone used the ability and their operator was running around and could do abilites like a laser. I on the other hand do my 5th key and my Operator comes out floating with a pulse everyone now and then like every 2 seconds. To me my Operator does nothing to the sentients and seems to be a waste for me to even activate it. Can someone please tell me how to 'use' her (I picked a female Operator). I'm not sure if I picked a wrong school or something, I picked Naramon, if that means anything to this. Read it does something like confusion but my want my Operator to just kill these sentients in the Ocativa Anthem quest. Well thankyou for reading this.

Press 5 to play as operator, hold 5 to use "focus mode".

Completing The second Dream unlocks "Focus mode" ( Your screenshot shows it )
Completing The War Within unlocks "Operator Mode" ( What you described )

After that it's just as Novus said above : Press to go Operator Mode, Hold to use Focus when the cooldown is ready.

You have to complete The War Within quest to unlock Transference ability (running around as the Operator).
