But all seriousness though I felt like it'd be nice to shake things up. I was having a little lethargy making a new weapon, and I figured "hey! That'd be a nice change of pace!" It's also worth pointing out that the Balaenis (prime) will not be Vulkodlak's signature weapon. You'll just see some lore with the Balaenis Prime, and you'll be all like "whoa, who's that?"

It wouldn't work anyway. I need a grenade launcher or rocket launcher that causes massive amounts of pain, and possibly slash procs to be his signature primary.

(Which is weird cause I figure I could just reconfigure the Poyang's stats a little so I can do that 😛 Maybe I should...)

EDIT: wait a minute, I don't actually have to do anything, and I can just give it to Vulkodlak unaltered! Well then

The table of contents has just received a bit of an updort. It hadn't been updorted in awhile, and links were absent or they weren't functioning properly. For example, there were no links to the Naga, Hypodermis, and Takkar, and Axon and Tarvoss just linked you back to the main page, what in the f-

Speaking from experience, well-made ToC is not only useful for readers, but it saves so much time when cross-referencing things in your own thread. So, good on you.

Also, that gun above looks cool as Hek. Is it Grineer-made?

Yep! It's a grineer grenade launcher that was an attempt (and utter failure) at the concept of less-lethal weaponry. Cause this is Grineer we're talking about. But it worked - sorta - by being a good area denial weapon, and flushing Corpus out of cover. It's inspired by this thing!

And, as you can guess, there's an Infested version coming. In fact I designed the uninfested version solely so I could move on to infesting it. It's the opposite of how the current Ogris model was developed.

It's a really good gun for closing the distance. The first shot has near-perfect accuracy, and it steadily gets worse. I mean, that's how shotguns normally act, but this is something you gotta see in action to truly understand.

But the gun is designed to be used while you're on the move, getting closer and closer to enemies while closing the gap. Also, it has insane crit. Which also must be seen to be believed. So who knows! With bullet jumping and all of Warframe's movement mechanics, maybe it'd actually work better in Warframe.

Grineer ‘Gax’ less-lethal grenade launcher

“This grenade launcher releases clouds of electric smoke bound to force any enemies out of cover.”

Lore

Designed “in-house” in the Regor Production Zone’s underwater armories, the Gax “electric smoke” 60mm grenade launcher fires grenades that release a nanoparticulate-laced gas on impact.  This gas conducts electricity, electrocuting belligerent Regor Production Zone subjects as they choked on the gas. Overkill, perhaps, but when considering the constitution of the Grineer it was best to err on the side of caution.

It served a comfortable if unremarkable role among Regor’s salp vats, birthing creches, operating rooms, stim repositories, augmentation chambers, bioslurry catalyzers, bioprogramming centers, and recyclers.

Until the day  back in ’15, where - following Nef Anyo’s investigation of Alad V’s technocyte infestation being in remission -an Anyo Corp force staged a submersible assault of Regor Creche 56. While repelling the Corpus assault, a Gax was used against the escort for a Corpus hacker…

At which point, it became clear that the Gax was decidedly lethal against virtually anything besides Grineer.

(gameplay note: yes, you can still kill grineer with this thing. Roll with it, I’m doing lore)

In part due to the massive amounts of time that Corpus spend in sterile environments of spaceships, the gas and nanoparticulates would ravage the lungs of any Corpus unfortunate enough to breathe it and cause catastrophic organ failure. The electricity would short-circuit the Corpus magnetic shield devices. Also, in a strange twist of fate, the gas burned the technoorganic  flesh of Infested. 

This gave it surprising utility for forcing enemies out of cover, and Gaxes were soon distributed to various Grineer tactical units and invasion forces.

Though that wasn’t to say its original use was forgotten. Not only do the Regor Production Zone still use it, but it found a use mainly in inter-grineer judiciary matters.

 It was used among the guards of places like Saturn 6 (rumors that the Wolf of Saturn’s pack have re-adapted this to make the gas flammable are totally just that, and should not OH GOD EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE, ESPECIALLY THE PARTS THAT CAN'T BURN, WHY HAST THE TEMPLE OF PROFIT FORSAKEN ME) to suppress prison riots, and to guard Rathuum matches.

Rarely, Gaxes that have been adapted to particular chemical concoctions less likely to cause catastrophic organ failure have been used by Grineer Marines for the purpose of capturing Corpus high-value targets.

NOTES:

You cannot use this on the Proxima because it has this as a basic effect. I don’t know what’d happen but mathematically speaking, I don’t think it’s a good idea. Also, using this with Adhesive Blast is the worst idea ever because this cancels it out. I’m not really sure what effect this has on child projectiles.

 

Artist Notes:

I’ve wanted to do a grineer revolver grenade launcher for awhile. The only problem was, well…

They looked boring.

I mean it. They looked boring. At least the Proxima had the excuse of being mostly wood-framed to make it look unique! But this… I just wasn’t interested! Like, at all! Perhaps there’s someone out there that can make revolver grenade launchers look suitably Grineer, but I kept on feeling like I was looking at exotics from Destiny and not weaponry from Warframe.  And, well, I like Destiny’s artists and fan artists, but I’m not doing Destiny art. Anymore…

Eventually I just saw that the Ogris has sort of a revolver cylinder and turned it upside down. Silly, yes, but at least this is one of the very few non-energy guns I’ve made in awhile that didn’t feel like a reskinned version of something that already exists. Concept-wise, this exists in something of a weird place - it’s defined more by ideas that didn’t work, rather than those that did. It has the cylinder because an early version didn’t work, and this only exists so I can infest it later. 

Oh yeah, this is gonna get infested. I’ve been playing a lot of Spacelords lately, and I really like the Raceme grenade launcher's model. This is sort of an homage to that thing, just… un-infested.

As for why this is a “less-lethal” grenade launcher, well…. lately, I’ve been trying to think of what’s ‘military’ or ‘tactical’ and exaggerate it to fit the Grineer. And less-lethal weaponry seemed to fit. The problem, however, was that I knew the Grineer would immediately fail. So I worked that into the lore of how this works. I also added in some grenade launcher mods just because I could.

Besides, a weapon dedicated solely to area denial was fun to me. I could do something else that does blast damage, but… ehhhh….
