Can you only use unranked guns to craft akimbo style pistols?

I've been working on ranking up various weapons to increase mastery rank (and because the game as some cool games) and I want to rank up the try akvasto. Considering that I'm crafting the base vasto anyway I w as going to rank up that too. However I don't know if you can only use unranked guns to craft the akvasto. Anybody know?

You can use both unranked and ranked versions of weapons to build the dual versions of them.

So you can level up a single version of the weapon for the mastery and then combine it with another newly built one to create the dual version.

Any rank will do :) When building the combined weapon, it will ask you to select which weapons you want to use for building.

Rank doesn't matter, just keep in mind that:

a) None of the upgrades it had will carry on, so any potatoes or forma are wasted.

b) If all the secondary weapons you have are the 2 guns required to make an akimbo variant, the game won't let you, you need to have at least one other gun present to craft the akimbo variant as you cannot be left without a secondary at any time.
