And Clem in his armour, and I in my Ash, Had just split up the loot to count out the cash. When down below deck there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the craft to see what was the matter. Down through the floors I flew like a flash, Cutting through vines with a hack and a slash. The lights on the carpet of the new-fallen spores Gave the lustre of infection to all of the floors. When, what to my fearful eyes should appear, But a horde of infested with a beast at the rear. It’s tendrils were slick, its claws like a mantis, I knew in a moment it must be Lephantis. More rapid than condrocs his creatures they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! "Now Charger! now, Ancient! now, Crawler and Runner! On, Mother! On, Boiler! on, on Lobber and Leaper! To the top of the derelict, to the top of the hall! Now smash away! Smash away! Smash away all!" As a fever that burns through the bones and the blood, When they meet with an obstacle, burst through like a flood. So up to the lander the infested they flew, With a gale of spores, and Lephantis too. And then, in a moment, I heard at the door The gnashing and snarling of each savage maw. As I readied my gun, and was turning around, Through the airlock Lephantis came with a bound. He was covered in slime, from his heads to his feet, And his body a trunk of glistening meat. His three horrid mouths were open and wide, And the stench of infection belched from inside. The stump of a limb he held tight in his teeth, And horns encircled one head like a wreath. He had a long, ugly face and sharp, catching claws, That screeched on deck when he flexed his paws. He was twisted and vile, a monster so old, And I screamed when I saw him, my blood running cold! A wink of his eyes and a twist of his heads, Soon gave me to know I had something to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And killed all the specters, then turned with a jerk.
