Side Mission

Hello Warframe Community. I've been thinking about something that could add a little twist to game modes like survival and defense, because quite frankly, it gets boring having to play an hour in a lobby with only one hardcore objective. So why not add something to a mission which could either help you or hurt you. For example, maybe at the 10th wave, you're given the task to find a random object in the map within one minute, and if you pass it gives you the cryopod +100 armor, but if you fail everyone loses shields for one round. Keep in mind it's an optional second objective, so it's either you risk it or play it safe.

I think the fanbase would react predictably. That is to say poorly, because heaven forBID that you suddenly can't boil this game down to a statistically best 4 man team with preset weapons and mods designed to do the highest DPS from the safest position. Nevermind that a little bit of chaos in a multiplayer game is a good thing, OP, and with a little tweaking it's something I could get behind

No offense, but that sounds terrible.

People play survival to survive and defense to defend, not to lose because of some arbitrary objective. It already has its objectives in running around and surviving and defending and hitting life support; introducing something like this is pointless.

That "risk it or play it safe" doesn't work, either. If it punishes you for not doing this thing, you're basically forced to do it, when you already have to either stay at the pod and defend or revive people or activate life support.

That's not why people would dislike it at all. It baffles me how people like you consistently believe that anyone hates anything they can't cheese when those people are in a severe minority.

There's enough chaos already. Adding in some "do this now or be debuffed" crap would serve no purpose.

The term "risk it or play it safe" means you can either do it and gamble for a win or loss, or you can just play the game normally. It is not forcing you to play the secondary objective

Good suggestion. I've actually thought the same myself numerous times. Randomly generated objectives could help break up the monotony so much. Running through an extermination mission and suddenly here's a capture or assassination target. Maybe you need to do something like hack the bridge of the ship to fire on a ship that's about to shuttle over reinforcements. There's an endless amount of possibilities that can have a positive, negative, or neutral outcome to spice things up and maybe give a bit of lore while making the enemy factions seem more alive. Furthermore in Defense missions even at the higher levels you can split the team without too much trouble. It contributes to the boredom when one person can hold the line without any help and everyone else is just there for the end rewards. You feel like you're doing chores.

I think instead of "risk it or play it non-safe", it could flat out give us small reward for doing optional objective.

For example: 15000 Credit, 5 R5 Fusion Core, Detonite Injector, Fieldron, Mutagen Mass, Forma, 10000 Affinity, a reduction in enemy spawn next wave, +5% to Life Support Capsule for 10min, Eximus won't spawn next wave, etc.

Here's what OP is TRYING to say:

After a certain wave, the game gives you the option to play the side mission. If you say "no", nothing happens. If you say "yes" and fail, you get a penalty

Minus the endless defense (at the time it was the only endless) there was a time when mission objectives could, and would, change randomly.  I enjoyed that particular feature alot, though to be honest I'm not certain why they removed it.

That said, throwing in random challenges would definitely spice up defense (I truly hate that mode) and add in interesting flair to gameplay overall.  Perhaps not so much on the penalty for non-completion (do this or lose shields/etc) but rather 'do this and get this' akin to how the affinity bonus works (eg 10 melee kills).

Well the negatives don't necessarily have to be that severe. Could be something like if you don't complete it a squad of Eximus or mini-boss appear, but if you do you get an additional reward or close down a spawn room for the enemies forcing them to come at you from different areas.

If the developers want to be really cruel with the system they could save that for nightmare missions. Be doing a defense and have the Lotus alert you that the Grineer are powering a shield neutralizing device or are planning to cut off the life support. Then you end up in a situation where you're playing defense and survival at the same time.

Section 8: Prejudice does this really well. (Or, "did" this really well, I should say, since GFWL shut down, you can't play the multiplayer anymore).

It would have "Dynamic Combat Missions" - where you'd have an overarching objective / mission, like, say, CTF or Interception (on a much larger map, like Battlefield, but still point-control based), but then something like every 5-ish minutes, something else would happen.

To put it in "Warframe" terms, say, an "rescue target" would spawn, and you could escort him to extraction for an extra reward (again, during the main mission (Survival, in this case)). Or, say, one of the rooms that you aren't in would become a "fortified position" with ramparts and shield lancer eximus units and such, but if you go there and clear it all, it'd be a big XP boost (think, say, a new-loka death squad, but you'd get, like, a Forma for clearing it, and it was optional because it was on the other part of the map). and whatnot. Or something like a Syndicate medallion would spawn, but it'll disappear within 2 minutes, but if you grab it, it'll give you double-shields for the rest of the mission or until you die. Something like that.

Survival games/defense games in general are fun because of the E-peen factor. You get to feel like a hero for splaying hoards of mobs in 1 fell move/shot.

What i find increasingly tedious is:

1. getting to that exciting 30-35 min mark when things start to get messy really fast

2. S#&$ drops despite working so hard (35 mins in and congraulations you get 3 free orokin cells)

3. the difficulty scaling is unbelievable. You are one shotting one minute and suddenly the next minute they are one shotting you (around the 35 min mark)

Simple suggestions:

1. To make things exciting, double the mobs that come at you while scaling mob difficulty linearly. Loot/resource/energy drops can be halved to compensate for the increase in mobs

2. Don't have 4 tiers of loot drops. Make it 8 or even 12. So when people get to tier 12, they know they will get something good/decent. Right now, it is more efficient to just stop at 20 mins/wave 20 in def and restart. *yawn*

Side Mission since we all like additional achievements:

1. No death bonus for x minutes till someone dies. There should be an achievement award (random) based on this that could be forma or even an additional prime part etc

2. Not more than X damage taken over 10 mins

3. Add in caches in survival/defense missions
