you get access to more loadout slots, you get to access some restricted weapons like the syndicate weapons, upon getting to MR 2 you can trade with other players. it's basically a numerical value of all the gear you've obtained and leveled. There is no reason to rank up. it's not an indicator of skill or anything like that.

Mastery Rank is like EXP for your account. You obtain Mastery Rank points by levelling up weapons and frames, as well as completing nodes on the star chart. The thing to note is that these only count once, so basically, if you max out, say, a Braton, then use a forma on it or sell it and get another one, you won't get more MR points from ranking that up, because you already did. However, if you rank up a weapon to, say, level 29, then sell it, but get it again later, you won't get any MR points for levels 1-29, but you will get MR points for level 30. Similarly, completing a mission node only rewards you with EXP the first time you complete that node.

Every level you get on any piece of gear gives you 100 mastery rank points, for a grand total of 3,000 once you max the item.

When you have enough MR points, you can level up. This is indicated by a flashing bar that appears on the box at the top with your username, avatar, etc, when you hit esc. If you have enough MR points, you can begin the rank up process, which involves a test. If you complete the test, you go to the next mastery rank. If you fail the test, you must wait 24 hours before you can do it again, but you do not need to regain the MR points.

Ranking up in mastery does the following:

1: Unlocks gear that is only available at higher levels.

2: For every 2 ranks, you get a new loadout slot.

3: The mastery sigil changes appearance.

4: You get more daily syndicate standing.

5: You get an additional daily trade.

6: The quality of your prizes from the daily rewards will improve.

Additionally:

At MR2, you unlock the trading feature.

At MR3, you can join Syndicates.

At MR8, you can access all relays and obtain all weapons except for Syndicate primaries.

At MR12, you can obtain any weapon currently available in the game.

I hope this helps you!

Mastery rank is earned by leveling up warframes, archwings, weapons, companions, etc. up to level 30. The biggest benefit to leveling up MR is that it gives you access to stronger weapons (currently, the highest MR lock is level 12 for Syndicate Primary weapons) but there are additional smaller benefits to leveling it up such as being able to gain more Focus/Syndicate points and trade with more players per day.

It's like the others have said: Some weapons, Warframes, loadout slots, daily Syndicate standing, and daily number of trades

The wiki probably has the most detailed and comprehensive explanation here: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Mastery_Rank

Towards the bottom of the page there's a list of every Warframe/weapon that becomes available at the different mastery ranks with everything else that can be gained from mastery below that. Currently, MR12 is the highest needed to unlock content, but there was talk on one of the Devstreams a while ago about revisiting MR locks of weapons since many weapons were released when there was a lower maximum rank (currently MR21 is max), but I haven't heard anything about that since.

Mastery Rank serves as an indicator of how many Warframes, weapons and gear in general you have used and "mastered", as in ranking them to 30. Completing nodes in the starchart also gives you Mastery points. It is a very rough indicator of how much you have experienced in the game, by testing your proficiency with game mechanics through Mastery Tests.

By increasing your Mastery Rank you get:

- Loadout slots (Essentially pre-saved loadouts you can switch from at will)

-More trades a day (every mastery rank is equivalent to 1 trade a day, for example if I am MR20, I get 20 Trades)

- Access to gear, places, missions and quests that are locked behind Mastery Rank (The highest requirement is 12 currently.)

-Allows you to place more resource extractors (basically drones that you put in a planet to farm resources for you while you are asleep)

-A higher chance to get better rewards from Daily Tributes (Login rewards)

-Higher daily cap standing for Syndicates

Essentially these are the benefits from ranking your mastery rank, other than for supposed "bragging rights" and "E-peen" of course. Now take that with a grain of salt, Mastery Rank is not an appropriate measurement for how skilled you are in the game.
