Here Is My Idea On A New, Possibily Fun Mechanic

Based from the reddit post that I made, that was asking for questions for an upcoming Questions and Answers from the devs.

Do you envision Warframe to ever have vehicle/mounted combat? I'll split this question into two.

* On large scale maps, do you think it would be cool to see some kind of mounted combat, and attack larger targets like something out of Darksiders or Shadow of the Colossus?

* If such mounted mechanics were implement, do you think you think you could make a new game-mode out of it? Maybe something along the lines of a Caravan escort, fending off Grineer riding on massive rollers (okay not rollers, but something?) and Corpus on mini-Zanukas? Or a race type game mode in which you have to beat the Grineer/Corpus to a  certain point and then perhaps it turns into a mini-defense before you're extracted? Just ideas.

Let me clarify that I'm not saying "add mounts" to the game, I'm asking more about it as a mission type/gameplay mechanic. Think of like a an old school game in which there were 'corridor sections', and you had to dodge things/shoot things/ go faster than the other guy/protect something/etc. In context of Warframe, perhaps you have to protect a bunch of cryo-pods.

In recent devstreams we were shown the Kugro or Kurgo, with hints at 'domesticated' variants. Could these be the "mounts"? If not them, perhaps something cool, like speed bikes.

The caravan/etc could be wheeled by these Kugro (think like mass dog sleds), with the introduction being that you as players take four of Kugro off the line to defend from attackers.

The caravan, or cart that you're escorting/protecting is moving recently discovered stasis-pods of hibernating tenno, and they're being moved to a safer location for extraction.

The gametype/mission could work in one of two ways. The player is automatically always moving, kind of like an "on-rails" experience. You can direct which way you go, but it moved for you. You can go left, right, even make a loop to double back.

OR

There's absolute freedom of movement.

I would think it would be best to go with the first option to keep a sense of speed. This is a fast game-type, very adrenaline paced and geared towards rushers! (or those who like speed anyway). As the level progresses, you're under attack by Grineer who are trying to stop you from saving your hibernating Tenno brethren, or the Corpus.
The Grineer and Corpus are like raiders, trying to get the old-western steam train to derail and halt it so that they can ravage the goods.

Some Grineer riders have melee weapons, some have guns. The Corpus can have crewmen as riders, or their "zanuka" like corpus pets that are melee oriented. They're trying to shoot your Kogru sled, and your objective is protect them.

How does this play? Kind of like mobile defense. Except... REALLY MOBILE!

How do you shoot? Simple, like you would normally, but with compensation for your speed.

How about melee? A little more tricky. Some weapons with reach are no problem, like Orthos, Galantine, the whips... glaive! :D You have to close your distance, basically position yourself so you're riding alongside enemy raiders. Quick strike, etc etc. Charge attacks could be really cool, perhaps with some spiffy animation in which you board enemy raiders. I'm sure the animation team could come up with some cool executions. Blunt weapons could maybe 'push' them off and have them be trampled/rolled over by their own "mount".

How about powers? This is a little more tricky. It would be too difficult and time consuming to animate mounted powers that require both hands, or require more than the upper body to work. So stuff like Volt's ultimate, Rhino's stomp, Necro's summon, these wouldn't work. But one handed casts, like Volt's shock, Ash's Shuriken, Nekro's punch, Frost's freeze, etc. Those work.

In short? Only some powers would be castable while "mounted".

to counter-propose a method for powers to be viable in this game mode, I suggest a space in which you COULD do that. That space would be the top of the cart/truck/caravan, etc, whatever it is that is carrying the precious cryo-pod/stasispod full of delicious Tenno. Upon this roof, players are crouched behind rails and can shoot back at the raiders. They are able to cast, they can shoot back, etc. They can't really melee, unless there's specific enemy types who's purpose is to board the caravan.

The downside to being on the roof is that they're more susceptible to fire because they no longer have the mobility they otherwise would on the Kogru. To get off the cart, a player positions themselves towards the front and with the push of a button (or maybe a cool"vault"onto it) they mount a kogru. Now they can melee more betterer (betterer? Betterer.)

Perhaps let Tenno hang off the cart to make it more ninja like. The mission type is timed, so like a mobile defense, except yet again... REALLY mobile.

Parkour? Depending on the environment/tile set, there could be obstacles to dodge, maybe you can even leap over  them and then back onto the Kogru, like a skateboard trick. If it's a desert tileset, there could be pillars to dodge, those sand ray things, etc etc. A forest tile set would yield dense vegetation to vault/dodge/etc.

That's all I have off my brain-pan right now, I have to go eat, but i'll be back. I haven't really thought of an outro in-terms of animation for this mission type, but if you have suggestions, say your idea. If you have constructive criticism, please leave it bellow. If you support the idea, say so. If you don't, say why you don't and I'll try to revise some ideas if the criticism is sound.

Brb. Oh, and if someone can teach me how to add images to this forum , I can doodle up some concepts.

Frost... charged attack idea. Slicing a Grineer Marauder in half. Upper torso/half falls backwards off the jetbite, whilst jetbite propels onwards and crashes into the ground. boom.

I made a topic awhile back on wanting more actiony things, even QTEs for certain things in Warframe. Even something simple like a player needing to actually finish a boss rather then him just fall over dead would be great.

It would be fantastic if they could do it. But I kind of doubt it.

it would certainly be interesting. we already have helizorencopters :P but actual vehicles would be pretty sweet. I think the vehicular combat should be limited to certain maps and/or mission types. maybe you'd have to slow to a stop to cast some powers, or something. maybe the vehicles in question would have a mode for speed (in which you can still shoot and attempt to use melee. jousting, anyone?), and an alternate mode for casting abilities (you can still shoot, but the vehicle itself is slower, allowing you to have more control over your powers and such). and some powers could work differently when on a vehicle. I'm just thinking things that have a duration and area of effect could be centered around the vehicle, rather than one static point as they are now (snow globe, sonar. world on fire already moves with you, but soundquake is a duration one that could just give you some damage pulses around the vehicle. mobile absorb would be pretty fun). or if the vehicles have their own built-in weapons systems, certain powers could be cast through them, such as a lot of 1 powers, like freeze, fireball, sonic boom, shock, that kind of simple stuff

Actiony, yes. QTE's? Well, QTE's are often a hit or miss, we seem to be phasing out of that era in games as they simply got really over-done a lot.

Thanks! :)

I don't want them done much, they're good if done sparingly. A simple ending to a boss where you press E a few times while crossing blades with one for instance, or jumping off a wall and slicing the infested golem boss in half or something.

  • 2 weeks later...

So what with today's stream showing more of the Kogru llama dogs, I wanted to bring back people's idea to this suggestion for a game-type/game-mode/game play.

Gifs of the stream. (:

<iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="http://imgur.com/a/Wi4vP/embed"></iframe>

edit - it's not letting my embed the images. ): Can someone add them in?

i want to like this idea, but i feel it doesnt fit the whole ninja theme... somehting about flying in on a jet bike isnt very stealthy. and i think itd be very annoying to fight on vehicles, as if the gameplay wasnt fast enough. though a slow moving escort mission or a literal mobile defense would be fun.

I think we've bi-passed the ninja theme a bit. The Tenno would be riding the Kogru, not bikes :P (well unless they add some cool looking hover-bike stuff). The game isn't exactly stealth simulator either, so I think that counter-argument is weak.

I think the gameplay would be decently face-paced. Have you seen the stream in which they showed the kogru animations? They look like they can go fast.

Thank you for the constructive criticism.

I think if this mode is implemented there could also be variants made of it as well that could be just as fun, if not more so.

An example would be having to chase down like a Grineer train or something in a Sabotage-esque mission, or perhaps an entire boss battle with this type of mechanic.

+1 for an idea I had thought of myself, +5 for actually putting up concept work to better convey their idea.  Not to be rude to the OP, but no matter the drawing skill level, it ALWAYS helps to provide some form of illustration to go with your idea, especially when it comes to enemies and warframes.

I don't know would what make for an appropriate mission type for this though that wouldn't feel gimmicky.  Making it a race of sorts sounds like the best and most unique option.  Alternatively, maybe just a tileset, like a train?  Something simple enough that level detail couldn't get too crazy, but realistically allows Tenno to hijack Grineer/Corpus hoverbikes after offing their rider and to proceeding through the level that way?  Of course, the bikes can't be modded, and the Tenno taking a fall would suffer damage BEFORE returning to solid ground.  Making the "fall pits" actually dangerous would be a nice change of pace.
