Step in the center and they'll come alive one at a time for you to kill. This will open the door to the next stage. You can also bypass this by going through the time rift to get to a floorless laser hall and sentry bot challenge. The hall part can be accessed by the rift that's between the grab plate challenges at the rest stop part.

What do you mean "something behind them" ?

Normally once you've done the parkour they become alive one by one and you've to get rid of them.

There's two paths through the room. One is a wall latching/jumping segment on floating platforms that leads to those four, who you fight one at a time in the room as a beacon zooms around the room draining your shield.

The other path is through the rift into the present day wreckage after opening the door, and involves sneaking past sentry bots and lasers to get to the console. Perhaps this is the one you've been doing?

If you take the difficult path of this room get to the hacking console, this is where you will be, having to fight them 1 at a time defeating all and you will gain access to the hacking console.

But if you take the easy route which it seems you did... you won't have to fight them and will only see them after you have successfully hacked the console.
