Using Injectors -- Sweetfx

xxx7
 Share

Question

Thought I'd re-write this post since a lot has been answered, solved, etc. and make a single go-to post for quick overview. This thread is about the use of SweetFX for Warframe. Thanks to some very helpful Tenno -- mainly sushidubya, Koyamina, RedDirtTrooper, CeePee, and RawGritz -- we now have a complete set-up guide!

Great news everyone: Thanks to U14, Warframe is now compatible with SweetFX in DX11! No more "half-half-grey-glitch"!

IS IT LEGAL?

So, first things first: Can the use of a graphical/shader injector mod ban you? Answer is

Nope, you're good.

and can be found here posted by no one else but DE_Steve himself: https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/34366-update-781/page-5#entry314666

WHAT'S IT FOR?

Alright, with that out of the way, what does it actually do? Well, in short it enhances the graphics, mainly by sharpening and eliminating the blurries caused by Warframe's FXAA. Here are some comparison shots. Removed pics. Might post a more extreme setting to better showcase the difference ("it's hard to put a movie in an image").

INSTALL GUIDE

How do I get and install it? I suggest you follow sushidubya's step-by-step guide here. Please note that for non-Steam users your install directory will be

/Warframe/Downloaded/Public

instead of

/Steam/SteamApps/commons/Warframe

OK. I got a couple of PMs from the other posters in this thread. So if you guys read earlier I recommended to try the "sharp and clean" setting at this link:

http://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/445/

on that link he refers people to download a certain build of sweetFX here:

http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=4581604&postcount=528

All I did was take the files like in this image here:

1.jpg

and copied them to my install folder (it varies depending on if you used steam or original installer) but basically the folder where Warframe.exe is located. The folder should look like this after you copy the files:

2.jpg

So on that first link I have referred you guys to the "sharp and clean" page looks like this:

3.jpg

Download the text file by clicking "download preset" then take that text file and copy to the warframe install directory:

4.jpg

It should look like the picture above when you're done. you're going to delete the original "SweetFX_Settings" file. After that you're going to take the "SweetFX_Settings_Warframe_Sharp and clean.txt" file and rename it to "SweetFX_Settings" exactly like the original file.

To make sure it's installed correctly there's a way to make half the screen work with SweetFX and the other half not. So you can verify it's running. Open that text file and you should see this:

5.jpg

Change the number 0 that I highlighted in red to a 1 then save the txt file.

Open the warframe launcher and make sure you're using 32bit. You should see a dramatic difference between the right side of the screen (SweetFX active) vs the left side which is normal.

Good luck and enjoy!

Important

If you want to use WF in 64bit mode, just copy the files (d3d9.dll and dxgi.dll) in the SweetFx_64 folder and replace the one in the WarFrame main folder. Make backup of the original file in case you wanna use 32bit later.

If you keep crashing when using the 64bit version, close all overlay you have like Fraps/TS3 overlay. You can run Fraps after the game has been launched. (Thanks for reminding me, Alif. Don't know why I forgot to add this)

I'll keep this updated and will try to add as much as possible. Feedback, questions, etc. welcome!

NOTES:

SMAA does not seem to work with Nvidia cards. SMAA does work on Nvidia cards. If you can't see any difference try lowering the SMAA threshold (I put it on 0.08 along with lowering LumaSharpen to 2.30). Also, be sure to turn off in-game AA or it won't work!

The 64bit version has been tested and found to work on both Nvidia and AMD/ATI cards.

SweetFx is now 100% compatible with Warframe in DX11 mode, thanks to U14!

Original post:

Now I know there have been various talks about this in the past, but not one of them actually answered this question. I tried contacting the DEvs, but they seem busy reading old PMs XD.

So, on to the question: Is the use of graphical/shader injector mods (read SweetFX) allowed to use for Warframe? I'd really like to use it for LumaSharpen, SMAA, and perhaps some color tint changes.

If anyone has an answer to this, please do post and include source if possible. Thanks!

Yes, but you missed a few points, "dear me" ;)

For one, SweetFX does a whole heap more than just saturation, contrast, etc. The big fish here is, in my opinion, SMAA. None of the screenshots here do it justice, you simply have to experience it in-game.

SMAA/FXAA does make a huge difference, i can see it in the screenshot.

But for everything else the injector offers, the same effect can be achieved by changing the simplest of settings, without draining your performance.

Thing is, sweetfx is pretty performance efficient, and you are playing down the changes it makes. In fact, most of the things you can achieve with out it have almost zero performance impact when you use them in sweetfx. SMAA, sharpening, per pixel saturation, and Bloom are all things you can't get from your control panel and that make a truly enormous difference in final image quality. You are right, you might not want to use it if you are running on older or under powered video adapter, but your game won't, and can't, look as good as mine does.

SweetFX has no performance hit for my game and I have 1-3 year old parts in it (i5 661, HD 7850 and 8 GB of some very old DDR3)

Only issue if found when i was using SweetFX is that it was preventing me from alt tabbing. Whenever i alt tabbed i got black screen when i was switching back to the game again.

SweetFX does make game look somewhat better.

I suggest you go to your ingame settings and set Display > Display mode > Borderless Fullscreen

This way you can alt-tab without any problems.

So uh the link to Steve's quote is broken or something, it links me to the main topic.

https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/34366-update-781/?p=314666

The thread has been archived...Thanks for the heads-up.

::Edit::

Link still doesn't work, seems to be an archiving issue. His post can still be found in the thread on page 5, post #96.

The topic has been archived so you can't search for them anymore, you can just click the link, go to page 5 and post #96 like stated above.

Steve clearly says SweetFX is safe to use.

Did that happen just once or is it happening every time you turn SweetFX on? I have seen texture bugs on characters before even without SweetFX.

Yeah, having issues with sweetfx, like not letting my alt-tab back in the game. Just shows a black screen with the warframe window bar at the top left corner.

I know it sounds like a silly idea, but did you try to alt-tab again after that happened? I had a similar issue in another game and I had to alt-tab at least 4 times to make it work right.

Op should fix the link with this:

https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?/topic/34366-update-781/page-5#entry314666

I posted above that you can run the game in Borderless full screen, try that and alt-tabbing should be no problem, the game runs in the background even if you tab out of the game.

Yeah if you're having issues with your character being part gray/white you have to disable DX11 in the launcher shown here:

WarframeDX11.png

While it may seem backwards to disable DX11 in order to run SweetFX I still do it because the overall quality is still vastly improved.  I occasionally switch back to DX11 and no SweetFX when new tiles are released.  I end up always going back to SweetFX.

Hope this solves your issue.

Yes, tried that, doesn't work for me. I use this trick on Dark Souls and Skyrim though.

Can't run the game in borderless full screen, it wrecks my performance.

I've learned to carefully Alt-Enter my full screen into window if I need to do something like change my tunes, etc.  So maybe you can try that out?

Good luck man.  =)

That's the downside for some computers, it adds to some peoples performance while others have it worse.

Personally I think it even adds a bit performance for me, or atleast there are no downsides. Shame for you though.

sorry for late relpy

yup. it only happens when sweetFX is on, im playing the game for almost 3months so ive noticed when some graphics changed with sweetfx

probably the problem comes from the DLLs. coz i tried swapping the 32bit & 64bit dll versions. along with warframe's 32bit version. then it worked

thanks a lot buddy. ya it works really  fine without the dx11, but ive made it working also with dx11 enabled, i just swapped the Dlls and warframe 32/64 then i noticed the gray parts disappeared , im new with these injectors , but i want to try anything to get a little more boost to play warframe, im just using a low profile graphic card ....

right now... im having no problems using this sweetfx, thanks for sharing...

I am having an issue with running the game with sweetfx on for the 64bit option. Once I launch the game, I get a message saying directx 9 not found. But if I run it without sweetfx on 64 it works just fine. Does anyone know of a way to solve this problem? I've tried everything I could think of to solve this before asking for help. Listed below are the things I did. If my computer specs are needed, I will post that as well. I would also like to note that it worked just fine before I switched harddrives.

Reinstalled drivers

Reinstalled Nvidia Cuda

Directx 9 and 11

Updated everything that could be updated

Forgot the rest. :c

Are you sure you followed install-guide exactly? If you miss a file or put them in the wrong folder this could happen. Another thing to check would be if you're running Warframe in 64bit mode when you use the 64bit SweetFX files. You already mentioned you're running in 64, never mind that part XD

I'll see what I can do...

1. Could you describe the crash in a bit more detail, please? E.g. black screen on start-up; or won't start up at all; etc.

2. Have you tried it in 32bit mode, and if yes, did it work?

This should help us isolate the root problem ;)

Yeap, same issue as me, doesn't work for me with 64bit on Windows 8, weird, neither does Steam overlay. You're going to have to use 32bit.

Ah, while this doesn't solve the issue, it shows where the problem lies:

It is well known that SweetFX 64bit doesn't do well on Windows 8.1. Sorry guys, this is completely out of my hands; would need to be addressed by the authors themselves.
