Why Undertale...why?!

I agree

Undertale is not what it's hyped to be.

I love the soundtrack to peices but it is not the best game of the year as many claim it to be.

It just happens to have references to things people like and admire. But its nothing revolutionary game play wise

Its the morality system, which honestly has been done before so im not sure what people expected

The game's good. It's not the best game of the universe or anything like that, but it's enjoyable for what it is. It's got a really good soundtrack and has some interesting design choices that you wouldn't really see in a non-indie game. Things like

) your game intentionally crashing itself and being in a different spot when you re-open it

The game itself is pretty cute and also has a lot of that "labor of love" feel to it, which people tend to like. IIRC it was made by like two people?

I stayed out of the hype, but played the demo way back and knew I wanted to try the rest of the game from that. I wasn't disappointed but at the same time I doubt I'll revisit the game after my initial two plays.

Morality system in games is nothing new. I think what makes people like it more in undertale is the fact that, aside from a few interesting yet spoilery reasons that try and set the game apart, the game is short. It's so short that your actions are fresh in your mind still, unlike say in fallout 3 where by the time you beat the game initially you completely forget that you had the option to blow up or save megaton or what have you until they mention it later on. The games short enough your actions can afford to noticeably change the world, and sometimes the narrative.

The OST is really good though yeah definitely

What I like is how his theme has parts of her theme in it.

Generally morality systems in games are direct and obvious prompts at pivotal moments (or even cutscenes where you otherwise lack control of the character).

"Please let me live!"

* Spare

* Kill

Complete with a morality meter on the prompt in some games.

Which is fine, but it's guided and obvious.

Undertale reacts to your actions through normal gameplay instead.  Things like winning or losing battles or taking specific actions get different reactions, even things like whether you changed equipment or which specific random encounters you beat or not have different effects which is refreshing.  Some of these things aren't noticed unless you do a second playthrough and see the differences.

Hell, Undertale even has changes depending on your actions as a player outside of the realm of the character.

Play the first segment, kill Toriel, finish the cutscene, then reload the game and spare her instead.  Flowey will know what you did and comment on it.  He has at least three different speeches he can tell you depending on your actions in the ruins, but this one stands out because it's the first major sign that the player is in less control than normally thought.

And a secret with Sans is...

In a pacifist run, when you talk to him in New Home, let him finish his speech, then reload and talk to him again.  Do this a few more times and Sans will realize you have the power to reset, using some of the times as a test of your ability to keep information across resets.  He'll give you a key which can be used to get into his home, but also into the lab behind the house which has some extra info.

I really enjoyed playing Undertale, even if I had the whole game plot ruined on Facebook prior. I'm a filthy soulless murderer though. Twice =)

It does some things well and the soundtrack is definitely a positive point. I ADORE Mettaton's first theme (Metal Crusher) and Genocide Undyne's theme is freakin' awesome. Actually so is Megalovania but the truth behind that theme is

it's the players theme, not Sans'

I like that the soundtrack is more or less split in half. The first half being energetic and punchy; the second half being goddamn depressing and pianos.

Guy's a musician first and foremost. No surprise the music is amazing. I could write a friggin' paper on how the game uses music as a huge part of the narrative.

*snip*

Also, I loved the game for the reasons Rydian outlined. It's more interesting than the usual morality system because the game world dynamically shapes itself around what you do to a greater extent than most other games that make use of it. That, and, it pulls all those weird metafictional shenanigans - interface screwing, even hiding secrets in the data files, all that cool stuff.

Not The Best Game Ever, but hell, I'm not entirely sure I've played a better 2016 release and would probably throw it up as GOTY anyway, keeping in mind the very specific "of the year" bit.

And because I'm a huge nerd, my Nezha's now cosplaying Undyne, because... I mean, come on, spears. And fire magic. And he even has the right body shape.

We all have our different opinions on the game, but I think we can all agree that the fanbase for the game is cancerous

And what are you basing that on?

Usually, when I hear people say it, it's usually about the porn and not the people who are fans of it.

And, I'm going to disagree with you. From what I've seen, people who have absolutely nothing better to do than hijacking Undertale's forums with "this game sucks" threads spammed everywhere are seriously more annoying than any fan I've ever seen.

The very first time I responded to an Undertale thread, I was treated with this:

"It's okay, not everyone wants to see perfection".

That was here, on twitter it's a different story.

And then we have the fanboys who are extremely plentiful. And then we have memes that keep being spread around.

I see.

Well, I've kept myself to the Steam forums, and even though we don't have a single moderator specifically for Undertale's community, a lot of "it sucks, why does it exist" threads have died down.

I agree, some people take this game beyond levels they should. I personally take this in my three way tie for my all time favorite games. Alongside it are Unthinkable Natural Law and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Sky. But I don't go around shoving any of them down anyone's throats. Surprisingly, I think the Steam Forums are rather...tame with this fandom. We do have the occasional S#&$poster and whatnot, but there's a lot of great people on those forums, so I stick around there and a specific group for the game.

And, memes? Cmon, that just comes around with everything. I personally don't like a few of them, but, again, it's easy for me to avoid them due to being in the greater parts of the community, I believe.

I seriously hope, if you do go check there that another cesspool of crap didn't spawn just to jinx the heck out me.

I'm a S#&$poster, I am familiar with memes. But imagine having your twitter being bombarded with papyrus and sans memes for a whole hour (and the guy retweeting them is a good friend so I just bear through it), it gets very annoying.
