Umbra Warframes (Discussion Thread)

I've been wondering how the umbras could fit in the game... what if the Orokin created them to be much like the Stalker, a failsafe in the event the Tenno would rebel against their masters.

We know that Ordis' consciousness was used to make him a Cephalon, what if that is what happened to the Stalker? A Tenno and a Warframe no longer requiring tranference. There's a quote from the Stalker in which he mentions himself and the rest of the Guardians watching from a dark place as the Tenno destroy the Orokin Empire. What if those guardians are the Umbras.

In the end we know that the Tenno won, as to how the Stalker and his followers failed to protect the Orokin... I don't know. Maybe we'll never know...

Anyways, just a theory to keep the discussion going.

Well, one of my original ideas was that the Guardians guarded the Tenno. Or rather watched them.

But that was based only on this line from Stalker.

"The Tenno were not stoic and sile t. They were poised, waiting."

Why would he know that? What made HIM realize the Tenno were about to rebel?

If he was allready worried, that is a logical reaction.

in the end iam still more confused about just one fact : Why does the stalker always said that he was in the shadows and watched, not doing anything as the Orokin died. While in the end he still calls himself a guardian.

The shadows from which he watched, that dark place could have been some kind of prison, maybe an orokin derelict. Maybe the Lotus locked them away to protect the Tenno... Or perhaps the Stalker just couldn't bring himself to kill his brothers and sisters. In the Second Dream quest Hunhow says: "You still hate them... you still hate yourself". Maybe after the fall of the Orokin he just couldn't handle the fact that he could have done something to prevent all those deaths but he didn't, which eventually drove him mad.

well, might be, but the Lotus says that the Stalker went mad when he found out the truth about the tenno's ... if we can trust the lotus on that one or the stalker is no warframe... well, who knows, maybe one day...

I hope we'll never know the full truth about the Stalker to be honest. The best thing about him is that we know very little about his past which makes him... well pretty cool. Also you are right the Lotus said the Stalker went mad after he learned the truth about the Tenno, which makes me wonder... did he go mad because he realised he hunted the warframes for nothing or did he go mad because he learned a much darker truth.

Well, the weird part on that is the Reservoir. It was like a Void-pool that the pods were in.

Lotus said: "Be careful when being near the Reservoir,  it is very powerful. It drove the Stalker mad."

She never actually said: I told Stalker the truth sobhe went nuts.

She rather implied we too could have been hurt by the Reservoir.

well if we reflect that the trailer shows the operator being ..attacked while in transference and somehow kicked out of orbiter to a snow area ? makes me wonder if we are not so safe in the ship ..

i personally dont think that we get kicked out of the orbiter... i think more that the orbiter will crashland... like most corpus ships on icy planets.

Hey guys! 

This thread has been going strong for 230 pages with almost 5.5k replies. Holy dedication Batman! You have speculated, theorized, and come to several conclusions about Excalibur Umbra's origins and his part in the greater Warframe universe as it currently stands. 

Unfortunately, the discussion has gone wildly off topic (and has been all over the place for awhile now). We will be sure to update you when more Excalibur Umbra information is available and ready to be released, but for the time being we'll be locking this thread. Now, I don't want to discredit the work (XB1)EternalDrk Mako (and all of you who have participated and kept on topic) has put into this thread to keep you all up to date with the latest on Umbra information. The reality is that the amount of off-topic and derail worthy posts and micro-discussions keeps doing just that. If not for the moderators regularly cleaning the thread it would have started to look like something that was intended for the off-topic section a long time ago. 

You are more than welcome to continue the discussion elsewhere (constructively of course). The lock is not to discourage you from doing so. The lock is also not indicative that Umbra is not coming to the global build. Excalibur Umbra will be coming to the global build, that goal has not changed.

What is Excalibur Umbra?

Excalibur Umbra is an upcoming Excalibur variant based on "Shadow Sanctuary Sword Prime", otherwise known as Umbra Excalibur Prime, a founder's pack exclusive in Star Armor: WARFRAME, the Chinese version of Warframe. It is not a skin for Excalibur, but an entirely separate Warframe with (presumably) its own stats and polarities, similar to how Prime variants have their own stats and polarities. DE has stated that Umbras will have something to set them apart from Primes, but what that could be is anyone's guess.

Excalibur Prime is not returning.

Umbra Excalibur Prime has different stats from our Excalibur Prime, and is limited to the Chinese version of Warframe which for all intents and purposes is an entirely different game.

Excalibur Umbra is going to be a direct upgrade to the standard Excalibur warframe that will be available to all tenno new and old

It's also worth noting that the Chinese version of the game is balanced differently. Also, who knows what could happen?

• Umbra Excalibur possibly has the same powers as standard Excalibur and is just a "upgrade" version for general users, as the Excalibur Prime is Exclusive to founders. so a global side upgrade to Excalibur Prime without treading on founders exclusives content.
• The powers displayed by the china variant EXCALIBUR UMBRA PRIME, show the same basic abilities of Excalibur and Excalibur Prime (umbra release video in news section )

With the original Excalibur powers in mind it should be

Please remember datamining is a breach of Warframe's EULA. I don't recommend or condone datamining, because you're breaking an agreement that you willfully made with DE. Remember that the game is still in beta and you are participating in its development as a proof of concept before full release. Please be respectful and law-abiding, Tenno. However, given Umbra Excalibur's supposed aesthetic similarity to Umbra Excalibur Prime, and that Umbra Excalibur Prime is already available in the Chinese version, which runs on the same game engine, it's safe to assume that Umbra Excalibur would be very easy for DE to roll out if it's not in the global build's files already. Just be patient, it will be revealed when the time is right.

Excalibur Umbra is a SEPARATE frame and is not a RESKIN of Excalibur like prisma or proto , but he can wear all Excalibur related cosmetics

The Scarf as seen in many Images/Vids is possibly a toggleable item in the global builds excalibur umbra.

But according to our chinaframe source in stararmor,  it is not a toggleable auxiliary on Excalibur Umbra Prime which our global umbra is based on 

It is Unknown at this time whether or not the "scarf" is an auxiliary item that may or may not be exclusive to Umbra warframe(s) global build

leading us to believe it could become an auxiliary like valkyr's Bonds, or could at the least be made as a auxiliary item.

On the international forums, there has been a discussion led by Rebecca with regards to the Chinese warframe. This discussion has lead to confusion over what the Umbra Excalibur, Nikana, etc etc. Therefore, we have had a discussion with DE in that effect.

As Rebecca has mentioned, we will be release a series of Umbra warframes (not skins), it is possible that there will be an umbra Excalibur as the first of the umbra series however the "Originator's" (which means founder) umbra Excalibur prime will not be commonly available. The Umbra Excalibur Prime is an exclusive warframe developed by DE for the Chinese version of warframe and is only available to "Originators". This warframe will not appear in game to purchase under the market nor will it drop in game. We (Changyou) and DE has finalized and agreed on this and will not be changing our position on this.

In other developments, the Prime (samurai blade or Nikana) and Prime (drill/screw Kunai) will not be on sale in the market and neither will it drop for China warframe players. These weapon are also exclusive to China warfame "Originators".On the international side however, these weapons will be released under an unknown format (might be event? market? Prime Access or anything that DE can think up of) after China warframe's Originator's pack sale have concluded

We've gone with the premise that the umbra warframe(s) is a shadow/dark, or inverted version of our standard frames, possibly stronger then the standard counterparts which are derived from the orokin (prime) technology

now that we know about the Operator / Tenno connection [second dream], here is some food for thought:

Umbra(s) could have been designed to be one of the many a limiting factors for the tenno by the orokin, possibly the negators, it could be a neutralizer type to suppress tenno powers, similar power to what the stalker exhibits in combat.

The stalker frame may be an umbra prototype or linked in some way as of yet undetermined in how umbras are created or wielded.

The only concept we know for sure is from lore he is of the lower guardian cast, and shadow stalker exhibits similar appearance in U18 second dream update.

Another thought is that it was designed specifically to combat the Sentient by the Orokin. possibly tailoring its skills and stats to suit the adaptive combat style of the Sentient, void energy may be a crucial part of this concept

recently many have commented on it being affiliated with the twin queens who we see in the warwithin teaser , for ease of discussion please refer to them as wormqueen and elder queen 

others have discussed that its a frame that moves of its own will and is not operator controlled

U19 : The Game Plan

RELEASE PLAN 

Part I: Lunaro
Part one will be called LUNARO. This team sport promises to reinvigorate the Conclave for those Tenno that didn’t have a taste for Tenno blood. We are releasing Lunaro later this week on PC! 

Part II: Specters of the Rail
Part two will be called SPECTERS OF THE RAIL. This is the Solar Map 3.0 update and we’re planning for release just a couple weeks after Lunaro. It’s why I wake up in a cold sweat most nights. This update contains a redesigned navigation system, a redesign of the Void/Key system (your collection still matters, earning wll be a bit different but there is no 'content lock out'), Kavats and a few interesting surprises for old and new Tenno alike. Pray for me.

Part III: War Within
Part three will be called WAR WITHIN. This update will be dropped in and around TennoCon and contain our next ambitious cinematic quest. We’re excited for Tenno to face up against the Grineer Queens, learning more of their mysterious past… but be warned: as in the Second Dream, we intend to grow and alter the game mechanics in surprising ways with War Within. We want to surprise and delight you.

Metamorphosis Theory

• there has been a few variations on this concept, discussed early on and recently 
•  the premise is that a warframe (vanilla) changes to the umbra variation 
• permanent change is the premises , but a temporary variation was also discussed 
• some variations include

1. a story line quest that triggers the metamorphosis (specific to equip the vanilla variant) 
2. a series of trials (in stages) that must be completed in order to acts as a catalyst to morph the standard to the umbra variant  (discussion of equipping an umbra catalyst "item" like inaros urn in trials)
3. in mission trigger (enemy, boss) that causes the change via cinematic change and battle 
4. a sequence of events that lead to a rebirth 

• with this concept in mind, instead of grinding for parts of umbra variants , it allows for player an engaging trial to achieve the umbra variant.
• which may make it more fun/worthwhile while also removing the need to delete vanilla variations many currently poses, and use them to gain the umbra variation.
• thus limiting them to gain one per the standard variation used in the trial/mission/quest. thus further allowing for expansion of umbra warframe pool to be brought on as trials are discovered, revealed

This has been a popular belief that umbra will somehow be an non operator bound warframe

many discussion have had variations on how this is done, and it revolves around the Transference system 

Transference and  link system: 

So what would happen to the operators "consciousness" if their own body was lost while in link to a warframe

so as we understand it  the standard works as such

Acolytes and umbra?

another theory that was conceived is that the acolytes might be a indicator of  frames that could obtain a umbra variation 

while the shadowdebt event is NOT related to umbra, specifically stated By DE in devstream 67

it was discussed that it may be possible that the stalker and his acolytes  are the "limited" pool of warframes that will have an umbra alternative, there is no evidence to support this, it is just a hypothesis.
