18gb patch?

That's basically the entire game compressed.

Should let it download, or stop it and check your install cache if you can.
No patches were due today, and even if there were, they would not be much larger than 50 - 200MBs.

My guess is you're using steam. 

Steam has an occasional issue where it either loses track of a games licensing (more common in F2P games) or something happens that forces a validation.

The problem this causes with Warframe is when it goes to check to see if it needs to redownload the game/validate the files it sees a whole bunch of files that are more current than the files Steam currently has on file. Which causes steam to identify these files as mismatched at which point Steam diligently goes about downgrading all the files so they match what it is expecting to see. 

Then when you go to launch the Warframe launcher it checks to see if you need an update ...... and you definitely do because Steam downgraded all of your files. At which point the launcher re-downloads all of the files that steam just downgraded. 

This scenario is one of the reasons people always tell people to make sure when they are validating their cache they do so through the Warframe Launcher and not through Steam as validation through Steam will result in the same scenario playing out.

This was exactly right, I pinned Warframe to the taskbar for ease of use and this is when this started happening. I launch from steam and it runs perfectly.

If you run the game from steam do not try to run the game off of steam it will wig out.
