Valve Announces Source 2

We all knew it was coming. The Source engine is pretty damn old now, at over 10 years -- that's impressive, especially given how quickly game engines can show their age. Source was already pretty robust and got frequent updates, but it doesn't make this announcement surprising at all.

Valve announced the Source 2 engine, the successor to the Source engine used in Valve's games since the launch of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2. "The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games," said Valve's Jay Stelly. "We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform."

It's also worth noting that the few times Valve has talked about Half-Life 3, technology not being advanced enough for what they want to do has been mentioned. So hey, Source 2 might mean that finally happens.

This also means that Unreal Engine 4 and Source 2 will be completely free to developers, and CryEngine is already fairly cheap. And yet, Unity3D still has a price tag.

I thought everyone already knew that Source 2 was coming.

And that Half Life 3 was coming with it.

That's quite the blatant generalization. "Everyone" refers to a fair number of people.

OP: Thanks for the heads-up. Will be following the news on this for sure.
