Ever Want Defense To Feel/look Like This?

I always thought of defense missions in ALL games (not just warframe) to be this epic......

Make a high ground location where you can defend a pod and maybe some turrets or the ability to detach the machine gun and replace it with your weapon for a while.

To balance it out, double the enemy numbers but they only have 50% of the original capability of the unit.

( ex. Crawler has 300 health, in the defense a crawler would have 150 health but their numbers are doubled so basically "shoot swarms of enemies" ) OR just tweak a little bit the numbers and the terrain, i mean atleast defense isn't that big of a map.

Doesn't have to be 100% same, although i really want some high grounds in defense.

I imagined this being grineer vs infested in a cutscene

Could be like that type of high ground......

Seriously, this is ridiculous. How is Sony getting money by not letting us watch 7 minutes or less of one of their older movies? How do they justify this?

There are websites that let you convert the video into a mp3 and/or lets you download it so you can watch it.

those videos are cool, but very ambitious. will be a long time before we see defenses look anything like that.

I think we need new Tilesets, ones with lots of different entry/exit points for enemies. a map we don't know would add more of a "dangerous" feeling; where will they strike from? you won't know... until it's too late!

true true ..... although I can't wait for some defense part in a game to be as epic as that.... since most defense types are just a group of 10 or 5 which appear out of nowhere.

Ever seen the Phobos defence map? It is pretty much that but getting the feeling down seems impossible. High ground&fortifications just don´t have much value when neither the player nor the enemies have much trouble byepassing them and when the player can just escape/destroy easily any force trying to overrun him.

The problem of defence is .... it´s defence. =)

A static objective in a non static game play.

Increasing enemy numbers won´t fix this inherit problem of the core gameplay. You would need to completely redesign this mission type and it´s maps altogether because for me the problem is that the object you need to protect from enemy fire is always only in one place and has no other mechanic than just "being" there.

That brings some issues like being fixed to only one place and the result of boringness. There´s no interaction with the map and the object. You´re literally only standing in one place and in a farming environment you will most likely push one button if you´re playing it "efficient" thus the meaning of "defending" is not a heroic, action driven, gameplay that let´s your heart pound with adrenalin(^^) because you could lose the mission if you don´t concentrate, it´s the opposite: a dumped down one button task for simpletons. It´s not the player to blame here, he only does what he´s here for, to play the grind in warframe. The one to blame here that the people play this game mode like they do is because of the gamemode.

The problem of this game mode; there are no other gaming mechanics involved in this game mode:

- there are no shield generators/repair generators you need to tap or feed with your own shield

- there are no other threats than high enemy masses, nothing like a super soldier/tank/vehicle attacking from time to time

- no events like random map modifiers for a certain time (enemies randomly jam weapon types, electric floor/walls etc)

- there are no traps you could activate like taping quickly three four switches in the map

- no other turrets/guns/laser except the four at void defence

- the object never moves

It's not hard. Warframe has plenty of mechanics which can be mixed to get out something wonderful.

We just need:

  • A dedicated map level similar to Earth's Defenses, with multiple entrances;
  • Energy barriers to stop waves, or renewable barricades (readapted Volt Shield? Corpus Laser Barriers?) which enemies have to deactivate or destroy (Hacking Consoles ala Interception?) to reach the objective;
  • Some nice mechanic to repristinate barriers between one wave and another... Gathering energy ala Excavation to energize barriers?
  • Defensive systems (Turrets?) which usage implies that errors are forgettable early and really dangerous late;
  • Some special Eximus unit with different effects, a tank unit to breach defenses (Imagine a Bombarder inflicting heavy damages to defenses), a saboteur unit (Imagine invisible units, Rollers or Ospreys able to bypass barricades or trying to reach the OBJ from the rear to inflict it heavy damages), etc;
    [This also to save DE from creating new units from scratch]
  • Different rotations in enemies' strategy, maybe attacking from different sides at alternate waves so players are going to reinforce defenses in anticipation on the hardest side.
    [Do anybody want a better use for Spectres, leaving them to defend secondary entrances?]

  • More and different phases, for example, similar to HIJACK missions you've to excort the objective through a map and stationate every wave to defend the objective more safely; (Example,basing on HIJACK Missions: retrieve the Objective, subtract from enemy control, escape toward the extraction point and stationate into a safe area waiting for air support, then after tot waves get out of the area and complete the run);
    [This maybe is better for a reworked HIJACK]

And of course an AI able to cope with different path routes and different objectives.

we need new pathways for infested, crawling on the walls, on the ceiling,

actually not crawling like that, just maybe like Vermintide's Ratswarming in your position, they appear out of nowhere and can find/climb/overcome any obstacle between you and them.

8/8. Best idea.
