Minecraft Is Being Banned In Turkey

Yeah sorry for a bit of an old news story, but nothing of interest has come out so I decided to dig this up:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/minecraft-ban-proposal-moving-forward-in-turkey/1100-6425828/

It seems that Turkey is attempting to ban Minecraft for its depictions of violence in the game. Now while it seems absolutely ridiculous that this game is deserving of a ban, several officials in Turkey state that the game is being directly marketed towards children and that is why it is deserving of a ban.

Markus "Notch" Persson will be trying to fight this decision.

What are your thoughts on this?

People are weird. Governments too.

But considering digital distributions, "banning" the game isn't really going to work. Not unless Turkey shut off the internet in their country.

People will figure out how to buy it, download it and play it. This is the information age after all.

that their decision ridiculous and makes no sense at all, if they think Minecraft is violent then they haven't seen a lot of other games that is directly violent by at least 1000x times compared to Minecraft.

This, indeed, just like piracy on the internet, almost impossible to stop if not

I remember reading somewhere that they'll block off access to the main site.

Which wont work, because I live in the UAE, they block off a lot of sites which I get through with Hotspot shield.

It'll be about as effective as that attempt to ban porn in the UK that one time. Now that was funny.

didn't they do that once?

Not entirely. They "turned off" twitter and youtube when wiretaps which really hurt the current government were leaked on social media. It didn't work.

Syria was the country that turned off the internet because of rebel activity.

Does Turkey usually ban games with any form of violence in them?

My understanding is that Germany and Australia are the worst when it comes to game censorship.

In Germany they essentially ban any game that has high levels of violence. Like Manhunt.

Of course games that have nazi symbolism aren't allowed either.

Which is funny because Persona 2 bypassed this by having the main antagonist (which is hitler) just wear sunglasses on the PAL versions.

Sunglasses. You can't resist them.

So is Super Mario Bros banned? You can shoot enemies with fireballs. Is Mario Kart banned? You can shoot enemies with almost anything you get your hands on.

Maybe.

All I know is that the Venezuelans must have enjoyed Viva Piñata like crazy.

...

I miss that game.

Fun fact: Venezuela doesn't allow any game in that involves shooting people.

I bet people smuggle illegal copies of Call of Duty into the country, hidden within innocent-looking child game cases.

I'm pretty sure the ban covers anything considered "violent".

Which is most games.

Almost everywhere where the rules are crap and peoples cannot teach their childrens to live the life there censor/ban everything which not easily controllable. Tv and other medias filled with sexism, idealism, brutality and still the peoples think the video games the only bad things in this world. Instead of ban/censor stuffs they could improve the education systems and teach the peoples and filt the degenerated persons whom already spoiled with bad examples.

Or you know...the parents of the kids can raise them properly to not be easily influenced by violence.
