Or do the combinations not really mater,
and I should I just go for appearance?

For the cats, I would say go for looks and maybe a certain polarity if you care- all have a self-revive, iirc. Dogs I have no idea

Most builds you are going to end up using at least one of each of those polarities, and that's all the polarity stuff does for them.

The one that chooses it's defensive style is more important, and decides what type of damage resistances it has. 

Whether cat like thing or sort of dog like thing, it's going to determine your defensive skills and is more important. On my Medjay Predasite I chose alloy armor, and he seems to be holding up well so far, but I haven't done any extensive testing.

When I looked at them, my guess was robot, but I really don't know. I'm not a numbers person so I have to wait until I get more information. I have a lot of weakened predasites/vulpaphylas to test with but I've only made two early on. I'm waiting until I have access to everything.

For the antigen, I would go purely for looks because I can forma to change the polarity but I can’t do anything at all to change the looks.

For mutagen, I read that Proto Shields or Robotic is tankiest. I’m inclined to pick Robotic for my Deimos pets.

I made a Panzer Vulpaphyla with the spiky mane and robotic resistances. I ran out of standing so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to gild it.
