0 MagPrime
Normal scanner - updates your Codex with specific information on the target you have scanned. Each completed scan results in a break down of a targets weaknesses, spawn locations as as well what items they drop. Synthesis scanner - relates only to Cephalon Simaris and gives you syndicate reputation points for him, where you can purchase items from his "shop" i.e. skins, special mods and Exilus adapters. 0 Endrance
Synthesis gives Simaris Rep, normal doesn't. Synthesis is required to Synthethize a target (for Simaris), while normal just fills the Codex. Codex allows you to know (without wiki) drops, elemental resistance, damage resistances and a few other info. Everything that Codex do, is what Wiki does now. Gives you specific intel about something.
0 (PSN)KestralSylver
If you're interested in finding out what each enemy is weak against and what their drop pool is, yes. Yes it does serve a purpose. The Synthesis Scanner does everything the normal Scanner does and on top of that it also allows you to do scans for specific enemies that will net you reputation with Cephalon Simaris. 0 Shinobi-kun
With the Synthesis scanner, you scan and get xp for Simaris. And with Simaris xp, you get to cash in for items at relays. Simply put, the Synthesis scanner totally rendered normal scanners obsolete.
0 nickelshark
Also, if complete an entry for an enemy it let's you spawn then in the simulacrum
0 (PSN)AirJordan73
Scanning stuff lets you know their stats and weaknesses, and also tells you what mods drop from which enemy. As for the synthesis scanner, the only real difference is that the Synthesis Scanner is mostly used to perform synthesis on marked targets, this is done by starting "The New Strange" Quest in any Relay, by talking to Cephalon Simaris. Synthesis scans on non-marked targets (ones that don't say "synthesis target" will count towards the codex entry, and also give a small amount of reputation with Simaris. Cephalon Simaris is located in any relay by going to the North Wing (just past Conclave) and looking for the Up elevator. His door is marked with a special symbol. He's also located next to Darvo's Market (the D inside of a circle logo) You can speak to him and learn about synthesis and even practice with the scanner and siphon trap! 0 (PSN)Elvenbane
I'm assuming Helios still ignores "Sol-battery" when only Synthesis scanners are equipped...but does that mean you'll have to keep buying more from Simaris? Or does he just use up what you have equipped in-mission (and stop scanning) and then you get them back at the end?
0 DiBBz
as of right now.. no but a little knowledge for you it was heavily rumored back in the early days, if having your targets fully scanned increased the drop rate of their spawn tables... this was when the codex first came out but i think that rumor was shortly put to rest a couple months later. 0 RobWasHere
Full codex entry allow Helios with simaris mod "Detect Vulnerability" to place a random weakspot on enemies, increasing damage by 250% when you hit it, but otherwise just a little knowledge like mod droptables. Or does he just use up what you have equipped in-mission (and stop scanning) and then you get them back at the end? Helios requires normal scanners to 'scan' anything. It still consumes a normal scanner on successful scan. If codex entry is full, the only way to get helios to scan the same target (with full codex scan) is by having 'detect vulnerability' mod which u purchase form cephalon simaris at the relay. 0 MagPrime
Synthesis scans also updates the normal codex. Really? Well, not much point in normal scanning then.

0 (PSN)Elvenbane
Helios requires normal scanners to 'scan' anything. That's not true anymore (u18), check the wiki...
0 Coaa
Really? Well, not much point in normal scanning then. Kinda. Normal are much cheaper then the synth ones. Until you get the sol battery at least.
0 DaftMeat
Kinda. Normal are much cheaper then the synth ones. Until you get the sol battery at least. Also, Helios only uses normal scanner charges. If you want your sentinel up scan for you, only the normal scanner will work for it.
0 Inarticulate
Also, Helios only uses normal scanner charges. If you want your sentinel up scan for you, only the normal scanner will work for it. Literally 2 posts above you. Update 18 allows Helios to use Synthesis Scanners. The main use for filling up your Codex is to be able to spawn the enemies in the Simulacrum. Otherwise, the only real benefit is you have a bit of a head start finding drop locations for new mods before wiki is updated.

This is actually pretty awesome, and makes Helios much more viable for high lvl content. It only works on enemies that have been scanned and completed in the codex. 0 CephalonHibiya
Most of the benefits of completing your codex have already been listed, so I'll offer some advice on using the Synthesis Scanner over the Codex Scanner: it lets you see through walls.
