My personal preference is to change aoe weapon energy to dark colors as to not to obstruct my own and other players view while still enjoying all the other particles. Napalm lingering in the air like that is a mess for most screens, especially when it gets spammed all over. A better effect would be something like Gauss' 3 which burns the ground rather nicely. Totally agree; I have my settings on "reduce teammates effects" or whatever it's called, and it's still horrible to try see through.
